1. The spell says "every object in a 20' cube", so according to the spell everything, including the ground, glows with luminous light.

2. The purpose of the spell is either to "see" invisible creatures/objects, and/or to make it easier to hit someone/something.

Why not just allow the caster to specify what is glowing within the 20' cube when casting the spell?
If the caster want everything to glow, then everything glows. If the caster only want invisible creatures to glow, then only invisible creatures glow.
Problem solved.

If you want to cast fairie fire on a large rock in a field, that's fine.

If you want to cast the spell on the terrain in general no. The terrain is not a discrete object.

Except you don't cast it on any object or creature, you cast it in a 20 ft cube and everything that qualifies (object or creature) is lit up.

Hr. I stand corrected. In double checking to see if I was recalling a past edition's spell, I find reference to how drow use it to decorate their cities.

If you can use it for urban decoration, then it should totally also light up objects in natural terrain.
