DOOM III Leaked!!

Well... I've played it.

Evidently, a warez group got a hold of a copy leaked by the fellow at ATI. It was compressed and watered down and then distributed out across the web.

It is said that the graphics are not running at max.

The levels are designed to show off the engine.

It runs choppy on even high end machines.

Many sounds, textures, and models are missing.

That said....

It is the most beutiful thing I have ever seen on a computer screen.

No game released to date can even come close to the graphical quality and atmospheric sounds of this Alpha version. It still has several months of development left to go through and it can only get better.

Also, rumor has it that it has been hacked and that the map editor and multiplayer code is in the demo. If this is true, we should be seeing new maps and mods created with the DOOM III engine even before it is released.

Very cool.

P.S. - This has done nothing but fuel the flames of hype for this game. It will sell better now than it would have without the leak.

A pity it had to happen this way instead of with an official demo.

I've also played it. When a friend gave me the link, I thought it was a demo. As was said above, its absolutely gorgeous even though the alpha runs choppy (I believe it was optimized for ATI and I have a GeForce 4).

The ironic part is, now that I've seen and played this hacked version, I'll definitely be shelling out the bucks when its released. I would never have considered buying yet another first person shooter otherwise.

Ashrem and uv23, not to mean any insult, but I find it kind of hard to accept the claim that the leak somehow made the game's publicity "better."

First of all, we know beyond a reasonable doubt that the game will have a demo of it released when it nears completion. This has not taken the place of any future demo that comes out, and personally find it hard to believe that the leak will have "hastened" the demo in any way.

Second, whether the leak was a serendipity or not, it was still illegal, and broke protocol between the two parties. If Id ever gets positive confirmation that the leak came through ATI, they could sue the company for damages.

Of course, there is the possibility it could have been a planned leak, and Id secretly approved of it...

John Carmack over at Id said that ATI was guilty. Apparently, the "watermark" all of the alpha files they distribute. The leaked file had ATI's watermark on it.

I have surfed around a bit and have been on several forums. I have yet to hear ANYTHING bad about the game.

Everyone has given it mass approval. I've heard several people say that they wouldn't have considered buying it, but after playing the demo, have changed their mind.

The only problem I can see, is the fact that the editor was with it. People are already started building maps and mods.

However, I doubt it will make a difference on sales. If anything, it will help as DOOM III will already have an estabolished community before it is even released.

Its a strange situation that has never happened before and will be interesting to see how it pans out.

Problem.

I managed to get the files and after unziping...I find the lauch icon and a bunch of files..clicking up the icon brings up a cool ID logo of a beating heart....but it keeps looping. Anyone know what to do?

I attached a file you will want. Basicly, you have to bring down the console using this button: "~"

The type: map e3\e3_1 for the first map.

There a few other maps. See tha attached file for details.

Oh yea, you have to hit Alt-Enter to get it full screen.

Enjoy!
