DR Who. Last of the timelords (30/06/07) [ major spoilers ]

My wife asked me tonight, after I'd given my, usual, comments on the evening's show, why I still watched it if I didn't like most of the episodes.

You know what? I can't, honestly, think of any reasons :( RTD is killing off my enthusiasm for Doctor Who at an alarming rate. I know they've said that budgetary requirements mean that they can't/won't be filming alien planets often and that he doesn't want to do the old "this quarry is really Planet X" bit, but having so many stories on Earth (or a varient of) is boring. I mean, even the next Christmas special is set on Earth - it's a SPECIAL!!! You should push the boat out a little!

Still... Sound of the Drums was an excellent episode... but is it enough to bring me back for more? I don't know.

1) Bizarre, previously unintroduced or explained magic sudden resolution? Check. If everyone thinks about the Doctor, he'll a) regenerate; b) gain superpowers;

OK, I grant you that could be considered bit of a plot hole :)

Yeah, sorry to say I hated this episode. There was so much potential, and yet it just seemed to be thrown away.

I'm really disappointed at Martha leaving, too. I had actually expected the Doctor to regenerate this episode, but had rather hoped he would not, because I felt a season with continuity of cast would be a good thing at this point. And then, we lose the companion instead.

Oh, well.

Don't worry - she's signed up for next year. They just need to give Kylie the spotlight for the Xmas special - because she's, well, Kylie.

I must say that when they "Killed The Master For Real This Time", I rolled my eyes - stop killing him off "For Certain, Promise!" It's silly - even though I thought the scene ("I win.") was fantastic.

But the final scene of the hand picking up his ring made me plenty happy.

But yeah, the Peter Pan superpowers were lame. It seems that RTD has a bit of a habit of writing himself into a corner at which point he'll pull a deus ex machina out of his arse. He did set it up better than normally, though.

But he's good at the drama bits. And has oh so flamboyant ideas.

Jack's the Face of Boe? That's quite cool!
I called it!

But people were like, noooooooooh.

They really need to keep RTD away from the writers pen. The whole magic powers thing really reminded me of how much I hated the season ender for the first series.

Of course the Master will be back, there is no doubt of that. I hope he is less silly this time though.

Ultimately I love some episodes of this show, and find others disappointing, and the last two were dissapointing.

It did strike me that every series ender has had perverted humans as the cannon fodder baddies.

In series 1 we had the Daleks made from "human material".
In series 2 we had the Cybermen.
In series 3 we had the Toclafane, the last mad survivors of humanity.

I wonder if they notice that they're doing that?
