I actually understood what you wrote there. That surprises me. I had French in school for 6 years, but I couldn't buy a cola there.

Well, not even every German would. Some insist to drink that stuff where they feed horses real beer and serve what the the horses pee out. I think it's called Kölsch there.

The part about me almost completely forgetting the stuff I learnt in French lessons, or the (sad, but true) stuff about Kölsch?

I remember the one time I got thrown out of the class in French. We were playing the "toc toc toc, que-est la?" game, where several children go outside, one of the others knocks, and those outside have to guess who it is. I was the one knocking. They asked if it was me, and I absent-mindedly answered with "yes" instead of "oui" (remember, that happened in Germany, and several years before everyone started using english words all the time). Suddenly, I was outside, too, and not allowed to play any more. Wasn't even intentional, but it seemed that even back then, I would have preferred English as first foreign language (this was in 3rd or 4th grade, still on elementary school. I wasn't yet the anarchic madman I would never become later in school.)

nah they are right, if i was born in germany to german parents then they died and i was taken here... i wouldn't get to automatically know german.
