Dragon #295 in Today!

I was just hoping for a list for GH artifacts. It would be a good way for me to make a listing for various worlds/settings artifacts.

Do you know if you must spend XP for all epic spells?

No. Its optional.

Both of those look really, really stupid, and have blunted my appetite for the book considerably.

I wouldn't judge the book on such a brief excerpt - although who am I to talk I do that sort of thing all the time! :D

I'm not sure what's "Epic" about slapping more and more of the same modifiers onto a single spell or item.

From what little I know the premise is similar to the idea behind 2nd Ed. True Dweomers.

It doesn't look like they have added anything new to the d20 ruleset at all, which will be a huge disappointment.

From what I know *cough* the rules seemed to modify existing spell mechanics rather than impart wholly new spell ideas...but don't quote me on that. ;)

Actually thats not so far removed from a spell I heard about in the Epic Rules...but that would perhaps be telling. ;)

eh

I personally think the spell is dumb, but i do like the sword. Sotra reminds me of diablo when you search for all these powerfull item with a multitude of abilities into them. Perhaps they should make "Set items", or some mtg items and totally just say screw D&D, lets just make diabmtg(the epic d&d). Hmm...lack of sleep.

As has been said a few times, the ELH is about creating a _framework_ on which you can layer on as much descriptive text and flavour as you like. There's nothing particularly "epic" about a laundry list of abilities, but that's because creating the requisite tone and feel for a deity is the DM's job. The book's job is to lay down the numbers and guidelines for playing at that level, no more, no less.

For example, Thor's Mjolnir is, according to D&Dg, a +5 chaotic distance ghost touch holy mighty cleaving returning thundering warhammer. (Thanks to A'koss.) Is that _all_ Mjolnir is? Of course not. However, in terms of what Mjolnir can _do_, it's still useful information.

I want monks who can throw a kamehameha and release all their ki at once in a blast so devestating that it turns them to stone.

I want elves so skilled they can capture the divine light of holy trees in gems and fight wars against evil gods over their possesion.

I want monastic warriors wielding magic swords who have studied secret ancient texts allowing them to fly and fight on the branches of willow trees.

I want great heroic warriors with indestructible shields that fight alongside gods against intergalactic threats.

And I want prophesized saviors wielding earth shattering powers who weld together nations to fight long imprisoned evil that is breaking free of its bonds.

This looks to me like the Epic Level Handbook will deliver.

Much to my surprise I got the issue today. Along with a curious note stuck on the plastic. Hopefully this is a portent of things to come.

Other than noting that it's not even a page worth of material, I shall stay quiet about the ELH.

What caught my eye was the article on dweomers you can put on your castle walls. Now that was a nice preview of an upcoming book. I hope that there is also a web enhancement when the book itself comes out. I'll be using a few of those magicks in my campaign. Along with a few extras I'll be designing peculiar to my game. (Walls that glow for instance, and shriek bloody murder if they hear a piercing scream.)

Overall a good issue this month.
