There's been a lot of discussion about the fact that *horrors* teenagers might get ahold of this issue and read something that their parents might not want them to read. It's my firm belief that one of the duties of being a teenager is to read the stuff that your parents don't want you to read. This is one of the great lessons to be learned by teenagers--that just because some power figure doesn't want you to read something is not a good reason not to read it. If this lesson is not learned, the teenager grows into an adult that accepts whatever the powers that be tell them. If this issue of Dragon enabled even one teenager to route around their parent's censorship, then huzzah! Hoody Hoo! and a big Hey Nonny Nonny!

Oh, I should also mention that this thread is on my wife's ----- (I added one extra - for the Irish spelling) list since she's had to listen to a profane rant on the way to work the last couple of days.

Hmm... yeah. Thoughtless rebellion. That's something I hope my kids develop. It's _so_ much better than brainless conformity.

Honestly, I hope they don't have either. I just want my kids to be able to _think_ for themselves. Note the usage of the word think.

One of the challenges of parenting is to guide your kids in their development, not to order them to develop. That doesn't mean the parent shouldn't reasonably review what goes into their little skulls of mush.

Been programming for 13 hrs straight so far. If what I just wrote sounds overly hostile, please take it with a grain of salt.

Oh, for anyone still following the thread and who might care, I checked one of GRRM's books out from the library today. Something or other about Kings (more or less picked at random from the available titles). Haven't had a chance to read any of it yet. Since I've been saying my opposition doesn't lie in his work, but in it's inclusion in Dragon, I figured it was appropriate.

Edit: Doh! It's the second book in a series. I even checked for that before I chose the book. Library barcode was over the "Continuation of..." note. Grrr....

.

I would be happly if my 11 year old would just read anything, if it's not 'N Sync or Nintendo then she is not interested. She has seen all the Scream movies and thought they were funny, heck she has been watching horror movies for 3 or 4 years and has no problem realizing that they are fake and you shouldn't do anything they do or talk like they do, she would find this whole thread very silly, the content in question is much tamer than anything she sees on TV every day.

Mountains...molehills...

Folks, come one. Be reasonable. It's one word.

ONE...SINGLE...WORD

Calm (I should say, the ****) down....

I am sure that the world's gamers will not be corrupted overnight. I am sure that there is no such thing as a teenager who has not heard the f-bomb on a regular basis, except for those who don't speak English:) .

And I agree...The (ONE SINGLE) curse word was in order to remain true to the character. Like someone else said, Asha is a rough-and-tumble Viking/pirate. You think she's going to speak Oxford English? GRRM's gotta remain true to the characters, adn that means using the words that the characters would use.

Besides, what's the point of using F--- instead of :) :) :) :) ? Everyone knows what you mean...why not say it? Its posturing, pure posturing (read: bull).

Folks, come on. Be reasonable. Read the posts before posting this silly "it is just one word" nonsense. That point has been addressed enough times.

i guess as i'm not a parent i don't care. but given that my parents and i sware in front of each other, maybe i wouldn't care anyway!
I've found that U.S. Americans, in particular, are far more sensitive about swear words than any other nationality. I've spoken with a lot of people from a lot of countries and I can only ever remember Americans chastising me for using 'vulgar' language. Swedes, Icelanders, Norwegians, Germans, French, Italian, Brazilian, Canadians... I can't remember any people from those countries getting up in arms over a little word.

But say the F word or, especially, the C word to an American and it's like, "OMG! THE WORLD IS CAVING IN! ARRRRRRRRRRGH!" or worse, "I SMITE THEE, HEATHEN DEVIL DEMON FROM THE ENDLESS FIRES OF HELL!"

Sheesh. They're just words...

Yes, but perhaps not adequately for some people?
