I was pretty into Dragon Dice back in the day and had a decent collection . . . . but soon got tired of the collectible aspect of the game. It's definitely a fun game, and I think even the original rules were well done (no experience with SFR's revised rules).
I think if you limited yourself to a curated box of dice to play every once in a while, Dragon Dice could be a good addition to your game shelf. But if you want to get into it as a regular hobby, like other collectible games (Magic) . . . you will be hard-pressed to find a local tabletop community. If I ever get back into the game, I'll be treating it like a board game rather than a competitive collectible game.
SFR has run some successful Kickstarters for Dragon Dice, and browsing their webstore gets me a bit nostalgic for the game! They've certainly found a community, online at least, and expanded the game in some interesting looking ways.
