[Dragon] Lord, the cheese...

I would hate to have Dragon's cover stripped down to innanity by prudish whines of a select few.
*nods*

So you prefer what we have instead -- Dragon's cover stripped down to innanity by the peurile whines of a select immature few.

/sarcasm

Honestly, the comment I quoted was extremely insulting... any time this discussion comes up, you get "You're all whining prudes" against "you're all sinning/immature/peurile incarnations of evil." Neither helps the discussion at hand. :(

Er, what exactly IS the discussion at hand?

Whether or not Luis Royo is a hack?

Whether or not the succubus on the cover of #306 is tame? Or available for weekends and after-hours entertainment?

Whether or not Paizo is shooting itself in the foot by pursuing a course of "portrait-y" covers?

Whether or not Paizo is shooting itself in the foot by pursuing a course of "peurile" covers?

Whether or not Paizo is shooting itself in the foot by not following the high example of older Dragon covers?

Whether or not Paizo is shooting itself in the foot by following the low example of older Dragon magazine covers?

Whether or not Larry Elmore is a hack?

Whew. I'm all tuckered out. And confused. But bemused, I must admit.

I don't know... all I know that if it were a trade of insults...

"You're prudish!"

"You're immature!"

"You're trying to censor me!"

"You're trying to corrupt me!"

... then the thread would already be closed.

Hence, an insult is not helpful to the discussion at hand. ;)

Is it really defending Dragon to say that it's always been like this?

Yes, its is. Its pointing out that Dragon hasn't really changed its nature significantly over the years.

I think that really just begs the question of whether it ought to be like this.

After all, it wouldn't sound very impressive if the New York Times or Washington Post were caught making up front page stories about candidates the day before an election (something like "Hillary caught driving drunk, throws dog into oncoming traffic" or "Clinton Rushes into Burning Building to Save Forgotten Baby!" and someone said "Oh, but it's always been like that. Look at 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000 etc."

That is not a relevant arguement, for a start Dragon is hardly a broadsheet newspaper. Neither have they run stories like that or have in the past.

A fairer comparison would be to compare it with Mad comic and you're complaining it lacks decent news coverage. Well what did you expect its always been like that.

I know. I'm just trying to corrupt you.

Larry Elmore: Hack or Jack?

Hey, there oughta be a website: www.amihackorjack.com

Submit fantasy pictures and see which ones get called hacky and which ones get called jacky.

I made up the term "jack" to mean "cool" and rhyme with "hack" at the same time. Just so it's clear.

Sorry to break it to you, but... look on page 143 of the Monster Manual.

And nobody's commented on my work... the link's in the sig, people, it's ripe for criticism on the nature of art and so forth. Although it occurs to me that the unmoderated cartoonist's web group I'm on hasn't had a flamewar on this topic... we've done politics, religion, all that jazz, but nobody bats an eyelid at stuff that would make this Dragon look tame.

Weird.

My only thoughts about the "cheese" in in Dragon is...

...ah, the power of cheese (four pages and counting, that's some power).

:D

Not saying whether it's a good or bad thing, but I'd say the strongest impression I'm getting from the argument is that we've been hit with that worst of all curses: "Sound Just Like Your Parents" :)

Personally, IMHO, speaking only for myself, etc., I see nothing particularly offensive about it, and really can't remember there being a trend of offensive covers. Haven't the last few been big buff guys in armor?

/em gnarlo!

I know the bland covers of Dragon in the 200's (2nd edition) was one of the reasons I stopped buying it. That and the hideous contents-page layouts.

Maybe I should give it another look.
