If I want my dragonborn to be reptillian looking mammals, then I CAN.
Hell, maybe my humans are asexual, Dwarves come from rocks, Teiflings came before humans, people walk on their hands and hamburgers eat people!

Basically, its fantasy. Its a magic filled world, who's to say whats "realistic".
