Dresden Files - Storm Front

I seriously doubt that fans of the books are abandoning the show. There's lots of people who still watch it (and read the books) over on Jim's forums. Granted there's more criticism and commentary but there's still loyal viewers out there, myself included.

I hope when they show this one in it's 2 hour format, that it flows alot more smoothly than it did when hacked (best word I can use for this) down to the one hour slot.

At that time when it was originally shot, they hadn't hired Terrance Mann to play Bob. So far, no real explaination that I've seen as to why there's no Bob in the episode.

You know, it's not even really the differences that drove most of them off. It's thinking that the books would make a great TV show and then seeing the bad acting and stuff that has marked most of the episodes to date. I still watch, though I don't always remember it.

If the actor wasn't hired yet, then presumably they trimmed his parts out (assuming there were parts) so as not to conflict, but... eh, I dunno.

I've read all the books and like the show, and so do all my friends that watch it (most have read the books, some have not).

More thoughts about Storm Front:

- I didn't like Susan. I'm glad they swapped her out.
- In the series his workshop is behind a hidden door in the hall, in Storm Front it was under a trap door in a basement, like in the books. I don't mind that change.
- I like Bob in both his book and TV incarnations.
- I don't think there would have been so many people asking why Dresden doesn't use more spells had this been the first show aired. He uses plenty here. Later episodes would have just been considered as Dresden detecting, rather than leaning on his magic.

I'm a fan of both the books and TV series, but I didn't like TV's version of Storm Front. The acting was bad. It might have been because it was the pilot, but the actors did not seem comfortable at all. You could tell the episode was chopped up, and the episode before it felt chopped up as well. There have been too many fade to commercial followed by Dresden knowing whats going on with no explanation moments. I did like some of the spell effects, but the hammy acting made it look cheesey. Since the setting has changed so much between pilot and actual series, showing the pilot cut down and with no preamble will leave the casual TV audience going  . The pilot was closer to the books in terms of magic level, Harry's apartment, and Mister, but still had a lot of changes in plot, characterization, and setting. I've grown to like the differences between the TV and book versions.

If you think the Dresden Files has bad acting, force yourself to sit through Blood Ties over on Lifetime (yes, I know, a vampire show on Lifetime). You'll want to nominate Dresden Files for the Emmys.

I actually think the Dresden Files usually has good acting, just not the pilot. The actors looked very uncomfortable with their parts.

I thought it was pretty good overall. It certainly made me think that maybe Dresden is a wizard of some power, as opposed to what the previous episodes had me thinking. I'd like to see more magic in the show (and less vampire lady - I can't stand that actress).

I so disagree with this. I think the actors in Blood Ties are doing a great job. Being a big fan of both book series I have to say I like Blood Ties better.

I like the characters and they are staying closer to the characters in the book.

I like the actor playing Dresden and Bob but I hate Murphy on the show. A lot of the changes I can understandthe changes with Bob. But I don't understand the reason for making Murphy the way she is, giving her a kid not having her part of the force that investigates weird crimes.

I have to keep telling myself when I watch okay relax they are not really doing the books.

But in the books she is part of the force that investigates weird crimes. Or do you mean she's not part of that in the show? I don't think they've ever said she's not part of Special Investigations on the series.

I'm a fan of the books, but the show is definitely growing on me. I miss some of the details from the books, certainly, but I recognize that a tv series is quite a different animal from a novel. If they tried to exactly reproduce the books they'd first have a lot more narration (never a good idea), and each story would span four or five episodes, also not a good idea in the present world of tv syndication packages.

They also want to appeal to an audience beyond just fans of the books, so they need to broaden the potential appeal of the show. This part disappoints me, but let's face it, somebody has to pay for tv shows, and advertisers won't advertise on shows that don't have an audience.

I"m doing good at guessing I watched this episode and said to myself that this felt like it should have been the first episode. It introduces a lot of people and now my fiance, whom said she didn't like the show, now wants to see more.

They really should start showing this show in order.
