It would work if you're willing to accept that race mixing would be minimal, save for some neutrals.
I was imagining that the races at opposite poles would probably be at odds, but the ones fairly near each other (and the ones on the good side) would probably get along.

Not to mention even races that are divinely inspired towards a specific alignment could still have factionalism and cultural distinctions.

Plus the classic "opposites attract" concept.

I'm thinking

Humans = LG
Dwarves = LN
Goblinoids = LE
Gnomes = CG
Elves = CN
Orcs = CE
Halflings = TN

Still trying to work out good options for NG and NE.

Oh sure. Just like people envision certain groups of people have certain traits because it reinforces their worldview and that is comforting.
False Equivalences remain false. Game groups and real life groups are not equivalent. How you see one has no inherent bearing on how you see the other.

I'd argue humans should be the TN race, though these days I'm feeling NE is applicable.

Interesting how different people have different takes on such things... For instance, I would never put humans as LG, but most likley TN... and make Halflings LG. I know it messes with your opposites attract concept, however.

My first thought was to make humans TN, but I had the thought that making humans the "divinely appointed" race would make the concept really sing. It doesn't allow humans to be the outsiders making comments on the alignment system.

What nine races would you want to use? Then you could decide where each fit "best".

Dunno. I'm more than happy to twist up various races to fit the concept, so I'm trying to think off what races would have interesting stories if I pushed them in a "specific alignment" direction.

Like, humans are probably TN based on their normal description. But, I liked the idea of how humans used to be the only paladins back in the day, and I thought of making them be the "world's paladins", a nation of people devoted to Light and Hope and Justice. They have all the classic stereotypes of a tightly religious community; as a whole, they're kind and compassionate and helpful to those in need, but they're also judgy and intolerant of deviance and lack of conformity.

I've always thought dwarves and elves both come off as too xenophobic and insular to really be "good", so I liked putting them at opposite poles as LN and CN to reinforce their classic rivalry. Dwarves and humans become natural allies, and elves are generally wastrels gallivanting about and making nuisances of themselves.
