[DStr] patents and licensing in the Empire?

wallshot

First Post
so my character has a really nice connection (half-gold governer of a planet) and my character also has some ideas for a few really kew weapons/gear...

Would he (my character) be able to apply for a patent and then have the Gold search out the highest bidder for rights to produce these items? what kind of fee could i expect to charge for mass production rights? i figure one of the items is a weapon that would sell for about 700 cred each, the other weapon U could prolly get around 750-800 but the market would be smaller (its a gunblade).

i know that for some this is puting to much "Real-World" into the game, but i think it could go great leaps to help fund a PC's adventuring...

NE idea?

If I was DM I would say no. The best case scenario would be for your character to design and build the prototype then hand it over the the Aristocorp techs. If it is a feasable idea and could be profitable then you would get a small cut of royalties. Being Golds I think you would have a reasonable chance of coming out ahead in this bargain. Remember that combination weapons such as a gun/sword have never been popular as they tend to bring out the worst aspect of each weapon. The only one I can think of off-hand that has been successful is the rifle/bayonet combo.
