DT's Saga of the Dragon Cult (Standing Stones)

The next few seconds are a flurry of violence and confusion. Brick moves faster than its bulky size would make one believe, traveling partly through the earth as a boat would sail through water. The elemental punches one of the berserkers squarely under the chin, stunning the woman enough for Grok to flank and finish the frothing mad woman off. Rogue takes advantage of the situation and takes on the distracted second berserker with enough strength to cleave through her light armor, shoulder blade, and heart.

OOC: One berserker and the cleric still up... John's move!

ooc: sorry, I have not acted for John yet. give me about 12 hours!

edit actively thinking here, just to let you guys know

edit 2: I am sorry, I am described by friends as being visually oriented. I like maps. So ot is hard to do a generic" There are good guys and there ar bad guys " on a scene. S, I will have to ask: Is there any opponent that is not engaged right now that caltrops would be an effective offensive action? As in, is there any of 'them' that are still on the move that if caltrops is place right in front of them it would cause extreme consternation to?

Oh, and that lucky person needs to be visible to John!

OOC: No map for right now, but I can tell you that the berserker is 20 feet away from your front line folks, but will likely close that distance on her move, so you have some meat shields between you and her. Meanwhile Rosalia is playing by her lonesome with a cleric another 120 feet away.

John sees the descending berserkers and does some battlefield calculations using his superior intellect and trained calm. At the right moment he creates a field of caltrops or the blindly running charge of combatants to go through!

Standard:
Cast cantrip: caltrops [spell compendium pgs 42,43]
duration: 4 rounds
attack: Caltrops: 1D20 = [20] = 20 for 21 attack
crit confirm [might hit a nerve!]: Caltrops: 1D20 = [10] = 10 for 11 confirm
verbal componant: Ego cum in unum consilium
Range/area: 35 feet/ 2(5'x5') squares at +1 melee attack

[sblock=spell information]
Code:
verbal comp: Latin for "I love it when a plan comes together"
Conjuration (Creation)
Level: Sorcerer/wizard 0
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Area: See text
Duration: 1 round/level
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

You speak the words and spread your palm open, as if you were throwing
jacks. Coppery sparks spring from your palm, filling the corridor with small
four-pronged spikes.

A caltrops spell covers one 5-foot-by-5- foot square with caltrops.
Every time a creature moves into an area covered by caltrops or spends
a round fighting while standing in such an area, it might step on one. The
caltrops make one attack roll (+0 melee) against the creature. For this
attack,[U] the target’s shield and deflection bonuses do not count, nor does
its armor bonus for armor worn[/U]. A target wearing shoes or other footwear
gains a +2 armor bonus to Armor Class (which does count). If the caltrops
succeed on the attack, the creature has stepped on one.

A successful attack by a caltrop deals 1 point of damage. If the target
is Small, Medium, or Large, its land speed is reduced by one-half
because of the injury. This movement penalty lasts for 24 hours,
until the creature is successfully treated with a DC 15 Heal check, or
until it receives at least 1 point of magical healing. [U][B]A charging
or running creature must immediately stop if it steps on a caltrop. [/B][/U]
Any creature moving at half speed or slower can pick its way through
a bed of caltrops with no trouble.

The DM judges the effectiveness of caltrops against unusual opponents or
opponents outside the size range given above. A giant centipede, for example,
can scramble among the caltrops with no chance of hurting itself, and a fire
giant wearing thick, massive boots might be immune to their attacks.
For every two caster levels beyond 1st, you can affect an additional 5-footby-
5-foot square, and the caltrops’ attack bonus increases by 1. Thus, you affect
two squares at 3rd level (+1 melee), three at 5th level (+2 melee), four at 7th level
(+3 melee), and a maximum of five at 9th level or higher (+4 melee maximum).
Multiple caltrops spells (or mundane caltrops) occupying the same space
have no additional effect.

The barefoot and rough-looking berserker shrieks as she impales her foot upon one of John's caltrops, and stops just a few feet short of attacking Scrag.

OOC: Scrag's move, but there are no caltrops between him and the remaining berserker. Rosalia may also move.

Init:
36/36 Scrag: 23 (killed BerserkerA)
Unconscious 0/7 Benny: 22 (injured BerserkerB)
10/21 Rosalia: 18 (missed Torslak)
Torslak the Half-Orc Cultist (hit Rosalia)
DEAD BerserkerB (frenzied, hit Benny)
DEAD BerserkerC (missed Scrag)
-3 Grok: 17 (killed BerserkerB)
Brick: 16 (killed BerserkerB)
DEAD BerserkerA: 15 (killed by Scrag)
15/26 Roque: 14 (killed BerserkerC)
15/15 John: 9 (caltrop spell)
17/18 BerserkerD (stopped by John)

Rosalia was shocked. She had been staring at the priest for a while and had not noticed he was armed.
She would have probably acted differently as she knew she was a poor fighter.

And it hurt physically. He had broken some ribs or worse.

She thus decided to retreat, unable to melee such an opponent but would continue to harrass the priest, making it impossible for him to continue his invocation.

ooc: withdraw.

OOC: Forgot I need to NPC Scrag...

With a great scream of "Ssssscrrrraaaaaag!", the troll rushes forward and buries his axe deep into the remaining berserker, with nary a care of the caltrops he crosses to get to her.

Caltrop attack vs Scrag

Scrag is injured and halted by the caltrop, but should recover. The cleric Rosalia had attacked is unwilling to let her withdraw so easily, and he takes another swing at her with his deadly mace as she slips away with critical wounds.
