Which they also don't attend. They definitely had no presence at GaryCon this year when I went.

Not saying there aren't gamers there. But coming in to watch a 20 minute commercial of a movie isn't the same as having real interaction with the game.

Perhaps in the Wizards era, but some companies take a small financial hit to show goodwill to fans from time-to-time.

Has nothing to do with location. I'm not saying that Californians can't be D&D players. I'm saying that this particular convention is not a game convention. D&D is a game. Ergo the biggest TTRPG publisher should also have a presence at the biggest game convention.
But ComicCon is a bigger fan convention. Ergo, it makes more sense to show up there to show fan appreciation.

Besides, as @darjr outlines (he is more familiar with the scene), there is plenty of WotC and D&D presence, even if they aren't going full hog like they used to.

It's not personal, it's just business.

Also note, as big of a foot print as they actually have at GaryCon, Gameholecon, and yes GenCon, they don't have a booth at any of those. The exception may be Origins or Winter Fantasy, I just don't know about Origins and Winter Fantasy is essentially the offshoot of their old house organ convention that is now run by Baldman games, the whole con is a WotC booth, essentially.

It is probably more effective to provide resources to Baldman and other AL folks to act as brand ambassadors, anyways.

Are there many dads walking around GenCon who haven't introduced their kids to D&D pwrsonally...personally...? I mean, seriously?
Maybe those who haven't "yet."
Anyways thanks to all (especially @darjr ) for giving me more information regarding the AL structure at these events.
I'll still miss those big WotC exhibits on the floor and being excited when they announced new products (even editions!) at game conventions in the past.
I guess we're just living in an era where the game is an afterthought to the brand?

I must admit I do pine for the booths and exhibits at those other conventions. Much of it was before I started going to them semi regularly.

Straight up, there is no such animal. There are going to be many, many more potential new customers at Comic Con than GenCon.

I'll take a D&D Direct like we got for Spelljammer and Dragonlance thst I can actually see over some booth that I'll never see any day of the week.

Well, those ideas aren't in conflict, really. Yes, Hasbro and Paramount want to create an MCU-ish popcorn superfranchise...but D&D really could do that, with none of the baggage of the Lord of the Rings (the Hobbit movies were fun, but I couldn't get into them because they were a crime against literature: nothing in the Forgotten Realms will inspire that instinct). Basically infinite sequel potential, worlds already ripe fir serialized pulp adventure.

The really promising part is the behind the scenes people in charge: the director/writer team are legit.
I just hope it does well enough to get an Eberron based limited series or three.
