D&D 5E Dungeonscape Lives!

At some point, the real story of what happened will be told. I can say definitively, however, that the quality or effectiveness of the product was not the issue that caused the termination.

For our part, we still think Codename: Morningstar has something unique to offer the tabletop world, and we'll be talking about it very soon :). For now, we're just trying to have some fun while we nail things down behind the scenes.

Good luck with it! If it's something I can use with 5e, then I'll definitely take a look.

Or maybe WotC's business plan just changed and the Dungeonscape project just no longer made sense for them?

That would be fantastic for Trapdoor since they could claim breach of contract and get some compensation, if they had a good contract that is.

The WotC executives (far above the D&D team) are stuck in the year 1996, from what people who would know have told me. I can't name names or say things definitively, because neither side fully knows what they want to do at this point in regards to legal action.

Of course, I could be lying. Take it for what you will.

This sort of accusative rumor mongering is less helpful than the non-informative press release was.

Even if you aren't lying, you could easily be mistaken - about the information, or who said it, or whether the person who said it is actually in a position to know. You yourself are an anonymous person, with no known record for getting news right, no known position to have appropriate contacts. Nothing.

So, yeah, expect people to take your statement with a grain of salt, or to be outright hostile to what they may reasonably view as unsupported company-bashing.

I'm quite well aware of all that. I was aware that what I have said can be viewed as speculation at best, outright trolling at worst.

You're absolutely correct. It should be taken with a grain of salt. I'm not a famous blogger, or someone from either camp. I'm not a reporter.

I simply know what I have been informed of by various people close to certain situations. However, since it IS all talk, it is nothing more than words and speculation. You're right about that.

But speculate is all anyone can do right now, until any word from some sort of an official channel.

Like I said; I know what I have been told by people that know what they are talking about. But I can not prove any of it. So for now, it's hearsay. Or speculation.

My gut feeling is that the licensing is on the verge of changing. Say if Wizards decides to open some of their game content. That would make the character generator market open up and then there is no need for a strictly licensed product.

Just a guess though.

Yeah, how about we just note that, if there are legal issues involved such that you can't name names, that means those people aren't supposed to be talking to *you* either.

And mentioning this in public means that if *real* legal problems, worth lots of money, come up, someone may try to seek out leaks. Including you. End result being that someone with even marginal ability at investigation might tie you to a breach, and from you to your people. You could be doing them a grave disservice.

So, really, you might want to stop now.

This would possibly be the best scenario. Then, Trapdoor would have to offer something truly unique and special, and they could compete with folks like the HeroLab people, and we would have an open and competitive marketplace where companies couldn't get away with sub-par product as easily, if they're competing. Much preferable to WotC anointing one developer as the Chosen One and following on with a restrictive license that lets them charge rents for exclusivity regardless of quality.

The internet's a different place than it was in 2000 when the OGL launched. There's a lot of potential for awesome if they go as-open-as-possible with it.
