D&D 5E (2014) Dungeonscape Lives!

I just don't see why in this day and age there's not already a robust officially licensed tool to make characters, it's a highly desired product.

Well, there are - for other games - Herolab, PCGen, HeroDesigner, GURPS Character Builder, the 4E character builder, and probably some others. 5th will get one sooner or later. I'd look at this as a temporary setback, not the end of the road.

4th Thursday in November every year. :) You don't have any American expats who have invited you over for Thanksgiving dinner? If I ever live in England again, I will send you an invite.

Nope. I don't know any Americans (apart from the ones I know in America).

My theory on why they'd be looking for crowd funding:

Due to the split between Trapdoor and WotC, it's entirely possible there are either lawyers involved already or there are talks of them being involved.

And it's possible that WotC/Hasbro would essentially stall them into bankruptcy...

So since Trapdoor already I vested so much of their own capital into their software, they need money coming back in regardless.

So crowd funding to release the iOS version, and use revenue generated from that to fund the other versions, being Web and Android.

Entirely speculation, of course...

Well, yeah, eventually i imagine it will. I hope it has more features than we expected as well; some surprises would be nice.

How well it is supported is also a big question. The DDI 4E Silverlight based builder wasn't known for being the greatest...

I only ever really used the Monster Builder, and that seemed to work fine. But maybe i used it offline. I really wasn't a fan of 4e after a while, but i loved that Monster Builder program.

This press release is yet another sign of unprofessionalism. Generating a narrative that makes them seem like they are innocent victims and WotC as thieves in the night. The truth is that two companies made promises and one decided it was not working out. Who is the 'bad guy' in all this? Well it is probably neither, all we know is that WotC was not convinced that the product would live up to its expectations. Perhaps it was just the timeline, but it also could be that they were not convinced it would ever get to a point where they would be happy with it. And if you can't convince customer #1 (WotC), the customer who is likely to make lots of money on the deal, who had (according to Trapdoor) no money invested in the product.... something horribly wrong was going on.

Or maybe WotC's business plan just changed and the Dungeonscape project just no longer made sense for them? I think we really don't know. Fun to speculate I guess. But it seems to me that laying blame is a bit beyond our current information. And, from a business perspective, perhaps irrelevant?

As for whether it's 'unprofessional' or a 'whimsical way to touch base with your potential customers'-- a matter of perspective I suppose. So I'll leave that there.

At some point, the real story of what happened will be told. I can say definitively, however, that the quality or effectiveness of the product was not the issue that caused the termination.

For our part, we still think Codename: Morningstar has something unique to offer the tabletop world, and we'll be talking about it very soon :). For now, we're just trying to have some fun while we nail things down behind the scenes.
