Dwarven Stronghold - a community effort

Heehee! Think how powerful the brewer's guild would be then!

I think one thing we need to remember about Dwarves, is that they make stuff people want. period. Trade is as much a part of their lives as the very stones beneath their feet So they get much of their grain from the surface, and from fungal groves and rothe... They can survive, but fungus ale isn't as tasty as the real stuff! I like your ideas though!

No clue. I don't like the idea of dwarven arcane wizards and sorcerers, but of course we need a way for the smiths to make magical gear.

I also don't care for dwarven wizards. On the other hand, 3e is a brand new animal. We can embrace it if we want to.

Consider the kinds of magic items dwarves traditionally make. There's almost nothing that they want, that they can't make through their temples. I definitely don't see dwarves doing a lot of traffic in magic items-- they'll keep that stuff in the family.

I should mention that I am a bit afraid of this discussion taking a turn towards designing dwarven classes. Since I am working privately and professionally on some dwarf stuff, I might have to bow out.

I will be happy to participate in the design and description of the city, but I am sensitive to any conflict of interest.

For what it's worth, I would prefer to see this work remain free, but I also think publishing through Nat20 and letting Morrus keep the proceeds for ENWorld is a fantastic idea.

do we have a name?

I will start a YahooGroup as soon as I have a good name. What is the name of this community going to be? At least tentatively, so we have something to call it.

Arcane Dwarves and the Group's Name

Sorcerers should be our arcane spell-casting dwarves, not wizards. Dwarves don't like magic, so wouldn't like a dwarf who pores over books, however dwarves are quick to recognize skill and talent and therefore can more easily accept the sorcerer's inborn powers.

As to the Y! Group name, I think "Dwarven_Stronghold" is fine.

Something to consider....

I'm going to start working on the Dwarven Rangers and Druids probably in the next couple of days.

fba827, you mentioned you were willing to help/share the workload? Fine by me. The more ideas the better. I'll email you in case you don't see this.

I think a yahoo group is great.....but I think it should be restricted access. Why? If we decide to sell this, regardless of where the profits go (I don't particularly care, I'm not doing this for money), we need to have a product that isn't freely available. If it's posted to the boards, it won't have any value on the market.

I'd think only those that express continued interest should have access to the group....I'm willing to handle those details if no one else wants to.

BillyBB, since you're the progenitor/point man on this here project, you wanna talk to Morrus about Natd20 options?

I'd prefer not to post anything I've done up (when I actually do it) until we know whether of not we will try and make a product out of it.

Well, did someone start a group? I went throught the process and got bounced because the name Dwarven Stronghold was taken. I'll try again if no one 'fesses up.

I think we should not worry about the final product for this yet. I wanted this to be a community effort, and to me that means everybody works on it, and everybody enjoys it. If we do try to put this in print, we'll need legal advice because so many people are involved.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I started this for different reasons than having to mess with lawyers...

I say when and if we get to that point, we worry about it. Everyone gets credit this way. So it's our project to succeed or fail on our own!

Not that I plan to fail! ;)

YahooGroup

Our yahoo group is now DwarvenStronghold.

the website is:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dwarvenstronghold

the email to post to the group will be available to any who join but to avoid spam will not be listed here. You must have a yahoo ID to join the group but that is easy to get and free. I invite everyone to join at this point. The group may become closed at some point in the future.

Community Effort!

I am sure I am not as prolific a writer as some who would join this project. However I would like to contribute in even a small way.

I like visiting these boards because it is a community that I feel I am a part of. In some ways it is like I am thirteen again hanging out on the corner in that old suburban neighborhood.

Some kid I don't even know pedals up on his bike. He has a hammer tucked under his belt, his pants pockets are bulging with nails. There is a plank of wood under his left arm. He utters those ethusiastic words that will set the course for the rest of the weekend. "Hey! Anybody want to build a fort! And off we go in all directions, furiously pedaling our bikes, scouring the neighborhood for any scrap of wood from any trash pile anywhere.

"Dad can I borrow the hammer?" Dad you're not going to use this wood are you?

But we know how those efforts sometime end.

I would like to see this project remain "Open Source" but I can understand the attraction of gold, particularly to a bunch of dwarves. lol

Well, if we DO send it to ND20P, I'll happily sign away any claims. Also, Morrus and RangerWickket are a bit busy right now with the book on chaos magic - the time to bring this up to them would be once that is published.

As to restricting access... Well I don't know. I can see a point either way :(
