E1: Tomb of Chaos [Judge: Patlin] [Concluded]

"I think we should go back to the room where we fought that awful jackel- thing & his bat swarms. There was some writing that we didn't read. Perhaps Nezrack could prepare a spell to help with that. Also, we have those crystal staffs which could fit in the niches. We might be able to open up a good treasure chamber there. That jackel guy was the toughest opponent we encountered. He might have some good stuff."

OOC: This encounter best described in post 401

Horse skelleton room. Probably irrelevent: [sblock]The room with the horse skelleton: The gnoll had iron scarab figurine (A tiny scarab beetle fashioned from iron with a circular base 1 inch in diameter. There is a word written in the same heiroglyphics that appear on the walls etched on the base and it appears that the figurine was made to attach to something)

Nezrak casts Comprehend Languages and suddenly all the writing on the walls becomes clearer. Looking down at the figurine he can see the word "Mekharr". It might be a name or something, the context does not really help at this point. He starts along the west wall as it had the most writing on it. The wall is covered with a series of Hieroglyphic inscriptions that contain numerous long-winded paeans to the greatness of King Toth Nekamek, "Trampler of Enemeies", his devotion to the "Long-Headed Lord," and the certainty of the king's eventual ressurection. The five parallel lines in various languages all read "Thus sayeth the oracle - in death shalt thou rise up to pluck the fruits of thy deeds." which seems to be a lexicon to help those knowledgable in other languages decipher the rest of the script on the walls.

On the north wall under the mural of the horse, it reads "Raad Faras" and under the king next to him it reads, "Toth Nekamek, His Royal Majest, Whose Foot-falls Are Like Thunder". Most of the wall is covered in the mural and there is no more writing. On the east wall there is simply the statue of the horse-headed god. No writing actually adorns this wall. Again when Nezrak approaches the statue a bird call can be heard to eminate from the statue's mouth, the sound that of an ibis.

We did open the secret door in the horse room. So I don't think that there's anything left to be found that way.[/sblock]

OOC: We did find some figures in the room with Novrne. We haven't identified what they open, but they look like they fit somewhere. Much of this tread was lost in the great Crash of June 06. It's condensed and included in post 307 (page 8). I've read that, though, & it doesn't seem to have any info on the little figurines. I'll read more later. *yawn*

With regards to the room with the puzzles:

The far door draws Nar's attention now that things have calmed down. The door is a massive stone slab with seven large bas-reliefs of animal-headed figures carved into its surface. From left to right, the humanoids have the heads of a hippo, scarab, ibis, crocodile, cat, ram, and an asp. Each of the figures has its hand before it as if it was grasping a non-existent staff; there is a vertical hole where a slender object could be placed.

Stepping back from such an obvious puzzle, Nars takes stock of the rest of the room while the others receive Ishmael's benedictions. There are various pieces of furniture and art objects around the room and most are intact and made of gilded, ancient, dried out wood. They are probably pretty fragile, but it might be possible to carry them out. In addition, there are severl finely wrought alabaster plaques. The shrine upon which Yinopu sat is likewise made of gilded wood and covered in Hieroglyphics. The carrying poles look a little too fragile to use to carry the shrine.

Some of the murals around the room appear to have Heiroglyphic inscriptions. The doors through which you entered have an arcane inscription of some kind. The northern wall contains a mural of archers, beneath which is an inscription. The southern wall contains a mural of servants removing a suit of armor from a figure you now recognize as Toth Nekamek. The inscription below the king is somewhat faded compared to the otherws around the room. There is another inscription on the shrine upon which the jackal sat.

Courage is outside with the other horses and the wagon.

That jackel guy was the toughest opponent we encountered. He might have some good stuff.
"I, er, think he was just, ah, a guard. This, er, door might contain, ah, Tot Nemekamen him-er-self."

Nars examines the crystal rod holders to make sure that they are not trapped.

Need a few more hints?

OOC: Love them. At this point, though, I think we can make something happen with the crystal rods. Perhaps the figurines are useful once we open a door with the rods, or whatever. I am stumped on the door that's too heavy to open. I ran across it in rereading the thread, but I don't know that I got everything. I didn't reread the thread from beginning to end, but read selected parts. I don't suppose Nezrak has 'comprehend languages' prepared? I do think we would benefit from reading the writing in the jackel room, though it may be explosive ruins, which almost killed another PC of mine last month...

From Novrne said:
Noticing the groups efforts, Norvne offers a trio of statuettes. He explains to Nezrak that these three items had been in alcoves on each of the walls of the chamber. He had pocketed them long ago but really has no use for them. The first is a ceramic figurine of a tiny ram. It has a circular base one inch in diameter. A word is etched into the base "Sera" and it appears that it was made to attach to something. The second is an alabaster figurine of a tiny cat with the same small base. The word "Ama" is etched onto the bottom. The third is a tiny sanstone hippo with the word "Nehes". All three have the same general design and look like they might fit into something.

The library before meeting the librarian said:
Nars checks for traps and does not find any. Trying the door he finds it opens easily. Inside you see bookshelves lining the walls crammed full of ancient books and scrolls of varying sizes. A large table stands slightly to the left, upon which rests a three-pronged oil lamp made of silver and gold, surmounted by a tiny wooden asp. The scent of light incense fills the air. Across the room you see another wooden door, also adorned with carvings.

The Sarcophagi where the rods were found said:
It looks like Nezrak has Comprehend Languages available. With so much text he reads several of the inscriptions as Gorefoot removes them from the caskets. In order that you opened them:

4 Cartouche: Ksantha Ama; yellow crystal rod: Ksantha;
3 Cartouche: Uarkh Afa; green crystal rod: Uarkh;
2 Cartouche: Sesh Tekhen; white crystal rod: Sesh;
1 Cartouche: Khesbetti Mekharr; blue crystal rod: Khesbetti;
5 Cartouche: Tesher Nehes; red crystal rod: Tesher;
6 Cartouche: Uatch Hefau; orange crystal rod: Uatch;
7 Cartouche: Tekhit Sera; purple crystal rod: Tekhit;

The two missing figurines said:
Hint 1 - Horse Room - Listen to the song of the birds
Hint 2 - Jackal Room - Look inside the box

Hope that doesnt make it too easy.

OOC: Whew. Well it looks like we found some missing figurines, the hippo, the ram and the cat. We have 7 rods, 5 figurines and 5 jars.

Did we ever try to go through the wooden door in the library?

OK. I'm going to go put the kids to bed and have another shot at this a bit later...

Nars's gaze passes from the door to the small pile of unusual objects from the tomb. "It, er, appears we are, ah, missing the bird and the, er, big lizard. Didn't we hear an, er, bird call in the room with the, ah, skeletons?"

"Yes, we heard an Ibis call whenever we approached that horse head god statue. The 'big lizard' must be a crocodile. But why do you say we are missing that?"

OOC: Hint 2 - Jackal Room - Look inside the box - I don't see that there was a box in the jackal room! Can we assume we've returned to the jackal room? That's where the action seems to be...

BIC: Percy lays out the rods. "In any case, there are seven figurines in the big double door in the jackel room which we have not opened. They have the following heads: hippo, scarab, ibis, crocodile, cat, ram, and an asp. We have seven crystal rods, yellow, green, white, blue, red, orange, purple. How do they go together? Well, we can match them using the names on the figurines.

Ram - Sera - purple
hippo - Nehes - red
scarab -Mekharr - blue
ibis
crocodile
cat - Ama - yellow
asp

We need to figure out which color rod corresponds to which figurine. We need to match the ibis, croc & asp with the green, white & orange rods."
