Too much angst. The original had as much as I could handle in a comic-book movie, but this looks to take it to far. Also can anyone reveal to me why the original did so well and why the sequel is poised to do the same?

It's difficult to say exactly why, but I think some of it is due to the character of Peter Parker. Who despite having super powers still struggles with things regular people struggle with.

As for this one looking to have too much angst... Well Spider-Man comics have always been heavy on the angst, from the death of Gwen Stacy to his "death" at the hands of Kraven The Hunter. Spider-Man is very much about angst.

Just some quick thoughts from a long time Spider-Man fan. :)

And to some extent, all the scenes I can remember of Spidey doing something truly titanic were after someone had worked his anxt to the boiling point.

In the first movie when gobbie is trashing Spidey at the very end and Peter is on the ground looking up at gobbie when his taunts cross the line, I had a flash back to several comic books I've seen where Peter was either pinned by a wall, or in some contest of strength and a villan did the same.

Threatened his loved ones, went some where there was a particularly strong reason he shouldn't go, etc. And then Spidey with a burst of rage and strength would heave himself up and go nuts on his foe.

Just seems like one of the classic things that Spidey does. Normally he's heavy with the quips, but due to the some times real crappy things that happen to him in life that superpowers don't help with at all, he's got a lot of angst and tends to explode sometimes.

I thnk the original did well because anticipation was very high for a Spidey movie. I dont think there was too much angst, it seemed to capture Peter Parkers dilemma as a teenage superhero pretty well.

Personally I loved the everyman aspect of the first movie too. My favorite scene has to be when Spidey is trying to save the cable car and Mary Jane and the Green Goblin keeps walloping him. The people of New York come to his aid by throwing rocks at Gobby- just beautiful :)

As I said, the first was alright with the conflicted (aka whining) Spiderman. But this second one sounds like a soap opera. Every character has problems.

As for the box office numbers for the first one, it always seemed like a fluke. Why Spiderman? X2 is just as good, it didn't do as well. Other big films didn't do as well that year. Why Spiderman over any other hero?

To me the fact that all the characters have problems and are trying to deal with them is part of what makes it interesting. The focus on the romance between Peter and Mary Jane is the heart of the story and has been the heart of many Spider-Man stories over the years.

I would definetly have to argue about X2 being just as good as Spider-Man. X2 was good, but the characters didn't feel as fleshed out in it. In both X-Men movies it seemed Wolverine was the main character and everyone else just road second fiddle to him. Where as to me in Spider-Man (and by the looks of it) everyone in Spider-Man has a story and it's all tied together into a unified story. I also think many people can relate to Spider-Man. The tragdy of his loosing Uncle Ben and the fact he blames himself for it, makes him so much more human to me. I personally I can also relate to his long time love for Mary Jane that was unrequited for the longest time. To me he was so much more human than so many other superheroes due to the emotional conflicts that went along with his being Spider-Man, being in love with MJ and trying to deal with the death of his Uncle.
