East Germany in the 1980s

I am wondering what kind of handguns did the police use in East Germany (DDR)? What kind of handguns were used by the KGB?

I am planning a spy game with the cold war still going in the 90s.

If anyone knows of a good map of East Berlin around 1989 that would also be great.

My google fu is weak today, so Thanks!

I know the standard officer pistol of the cold war era is a Makarov 9x18mm (don't know clip size off the top of my head, but I own 2 of them).

They are just like normal 9mm, except that they're a tad shorter and have less power than a normal 9mm..doubt that would even bother translating in game terms.

THey had gun manufacturers in EG (some of the best accuracy makarovs), one in bulgaria, one in china, and one in russia. They're cheap guns too, you can pick em up today for about $150.

www.makarov.com (last i knew that was a good info site for makarov fans)

Preface: IANAGN (I am not a gun nut! ;))

The standard pistol issued to the "Volkspolizei" of the Deutsche Demokratische Republik (The abbreviation DDR was never used offically.) was the Makarov M (9x18mm), built in license (of the sowjet Makarov PM) by the Ernst Thälman Werke since the sixties.

Overall length: 160 mm
Weight (loaded): 0,8 kg
Weight (empty): 0,73 kg
Clip size: 8 bullets

For the sowjet side, I would suggest:

1. Makarov PM

2. PSM (5,45x18mm): A newer development (produced since around 1983)

Overall length: 155 mm
Weight (loaded): 0,51 kg
Weight (empty): 0,47 kg
Clip size: 8 bullets

3. P6 (9x18mm): designed as a suppressed weapon, the P6 fires a subsonic bullet. While it has an integral suppressor, for optimal efficience a extension suppressor shuld be used (which is issued with the weapon and is carried in a pocket of the holster).

Overall length: 195 mm (297 with extension suppressor)
Weight (loaded): 1,1 kg (suppressor weight: 0,16 kg)
Weight (empty): 0,97 kg
Clip size: 8 bullets

Hope this helps!

You answered the question yourself: The Makarov 9x18mm uses the 9x18mm Russian round.

[edit]Nevermind. I confused it with ammo type.[/edit]

Ah, I had found someone who wrote it as Markow. Hence, i couldn't find anything. Thanks! (and I managed to find some maps as well... so I am ready to go).

Anyone have some suggestions for the stats of the above weapons?

Eh. I did quite a long google session and found something. Saved them and didn't keep the links. Sorry.

I can't attach files at the moment either... Sorry again.

If you wanna get technical...

It's more of a Walther PPK. :)

Honestly, I don't understand the justification for having lower stats because it's got 1mm less powder in it...but hey, not my call.
