Effective Character Level...

Some people would say (I being one of those people.) that the 2nd level fighter is not really defeating the monsters, it is only the 10th level fighter, therefore I would not award any experience to the 2nd level fighter.

It's D&D. Kill the 2nd level character occasionally. He'll get so much XP from the fights he contributes to it will balance out the level loses from Raise Dead / Resurrection. Plus you'll be able to cram in all sorts of visceral death scenes.
Actually, the rules are silent about this: Defeating a monster with a CR 8 levels above the character's level will grant '*' xp. '*' being defined as DM's call.

In my game the level 2 character would not gain any xp.

Thanks everyone for answering and for your suggestions, they really help me with how I want to handle both encounters and figuring experience plus treasure.

Especially the encounters, when they are a very high EL I'll have the lvl 2 character dancing around the fringes shooting arrows or lobbing her spell, generally trying to help while trying not to die.

I like the suggestion of the lvl 10 character setting up low level encounters and already got some story ideas for that.

Again big thanks take care...

Oh visceral death scenes is one thing my stories don't lack...
