D&D 5E (2024) Eldritch Knight

Quoting from the War Caster feat on page 209 of the 2024 PHB, "When a creature provokes an Opportunity Attack from you by leaving your reach, you can take a Reaction to cast a spell at the creature rather than making an Opportunity Attack. The spell must have a casting time of one action and must target only that creature."
good for casting Cure wounds on allies, hehehe.

Interestingly, here's the 5E PHB p.195 wording, "You can make an opportunity attack when a hostile creature that you can see moves out of your reach."

And here's the D&D 2024 PHB p.26 wording (same as on p.371), "You can make an opportunity attack when a creature that you can see leaves your reach." So the D&D 2024 version does not specify hostile, unlike the D&D 2014 version.

D&D 2024 oddities like this are discussed in this ENWorld thread.

I see the next post now. Yeah I'd interpret allies as not providing the OA condition.

But I do believe warcaster would allow a sort of OA while you have focus in-hand. Since there is conversation about draw, stow, draw. Or you could always go weapon + focus and ditch shield... though equipping a 🛡 takes an action. That would be available at the level it matters at. Otherwise, war-mage ruby is close to canon in this game... I would write up a small-time rationale on my PC goal to get one... most likely my DM would have me fight a miniboss that has one, or make me beg our rogue to lift it

Problem with GISH mindset to me is they just want to have it all

By the 2014 and 2024 D&D rules as written, if you have the War Caster feat, and the spell has no material components, then no need to have a focus in hand when you do so, as you can perform the somatic components when you have your hands full with weapons and/or shield.

You are correct that if the spell has a material focus, that you either need a hand free, or to have the focus in hand to do so as a reaction, as you cannot perform sheathe your weapon as a free object interaction as it is not your turn.

If you're fighting with a two-handed weapon, presumably you can also relax to a one-handed grip to cast a spell with a material component as a reaction with the War Caster feat.

The spells Booming Blade, Green Flame-Blade, and Steel Wind Strike are an exception to this free hand requirement for a two-weapon fighter or weapon-and-shield user, as the material component is the weapon, so you have it in hand already and hence can cast the spell as a reaction with the War Caster feat.

Works for me. I don't use the relic "__ blade" stuff myself... but that is juice for a different thread where I would get annihilated by people that like those spells 😀

More like function as intended.
You coukd use a obe handed weapon but opportunity cost of no shield or two handed weapon is high. Pick a different subclsss levels of high.

And its not like the gish subclasses are all that either. Battlemaster is better than EK, then champion at level 10 is beautiful.

Valor bard takes a long time to get good.

Bladesinger doesn't work well as a gish

Bladelock has issues. We used 5.0 material to make it work. Should have been a paladin instead tbh.
