The point is probably moot now, but the DeskStars were a disaster for IBM, they had a failure rate several times higher than the industry average which IBM tried to cover up (gotta love uncovered internal eMails ). In the end the scandal was responsible for IBM selling off it's desktop storage division to Hitachi.

Avoid them at all costs.

I certainly will in the future. Hm, if they are this prone to failure, I might get lucky and find one with damaged drive or plates but working controller for very little.

Un-interruptable Power Source, this is a battery backup, it also is a surge protector and evens out your electical flow to your PC, it normally only gives you 10 minutes but that is enough. Most power damage does not come from power but phone lines, so make sure you have a surge protector that covers this.
