I was looking through the planar handbook, and I've been thinking it could be cool to allow people to be aligned to a specific element, just like they are to good or evil.
So I'm not sure if I want this to confer any bonuses and, if I do, want them balanced out. Perhaps a minor damage resistance to the chosen element and vulnerability to the opposed element.
So in addition to or instead of the normal moral alignment, you can be fire, water, earth or air aligned. Or, you can even combine any two non-opposed elements. If you want, toss positive and negative energy in there, too. At the very least, the character's elemental alignment is affected much like their moral alignment, and there are magic circles against fire and such.
The way I'm thinking of doing it, morality is tied to elemental alignment. There's 1 good, 1 evil, 3 lawful, 3 chaotic and 2 each of true neutral and the combination alignments.
So there are 18 different possibilities (corresponding to the 18 elemental, paraelemental and quasielemental planes), namely...
Positive (Neutral good)
Negative (Neutral evil)
Fire (Chaotic neutral)
Water (Lawful neutral)
Earth (Lawful neutral)
Air (Chaotic neutral)
Positive-Fire (Radiance) (Chaotic good)
Positive-Water (Steam) (Lawful good)
Positive-Earth (Mineral) (Lawful good)
Positive-Air (Lightning) (Chaotic good)
Negative-Fire (Ash) (Chaotic evil)
Negative-Water (Salt) (Lawful evil)
Negative-Earth (Dust) (Lawful evil)
Negative-Air (Vacuum) (Chaotic evil)
Fire-Earth (Magma) (True neutral)
Fire-Air (Smoke) (Chaotic neutral)
Water-Earth (Ooze) (Lawful neutral)
Water-Air (Ice) (True neutral)
So, what do you all think? Can you see any complications or potential imbalances? I think it would work a lot better in a game in which the PCs frequently had cause to go to different planes.
