Following the richest man in the world's attack on Wizards of the Coast for two paragraphs in the 500-page celebration of D&D, The Making of Original Dungeons & Dragons 1970-1977, Elon Musk--who bought Twitter not that long ago--wants to know how much D&D's owner Hasbro would cost.

After the public sharing on Twitter of Jason Tondro's (who wrote the book’s foreword) private Facebook posts, Musk replied "How much is Hasbro?"

Hasbro's estimated capitalization is currently $8.71 billion, with $3.95 billion of debt.

It was on 21st December 2017 when Musk similarly enquired "How much is it?" before proceeding to make a bid for Twitter. He later tried to back out of the deal, but was forced to buy the platform for $44 billion in June 2022. Current estimates by investment firm Fidelity put the platform at a value 80% less than when he bought it, with a worth of only about $9.4 billion.

5 to 8 years ago Musk was the golden boy of progressives who was going to save the environment. This still seems weird to me.
Then he went mask off, because it turns out people will consider folks based on their actions and will be free to re-analyse them accordingly, not just hero worship

Like, you can downright track his progression from being liked to being maligned after that 2018 cave flood incident, where he tried to insert himself as a hero, got told "Nah we got this", and immediately decided to attack the people involved

Hey this is a crazy thread! All I can tell you is that if it wasn't for me dropping in on EnWorld from time to time, I never would have even known this might happen.

It makes me wonder just how invested the fanbase is in all this? Most the people I know and play with would have no clue this might be going on, continue to play D&D anyway, and buy whatever products looks good in the future under the D&D brand, whether WotC or Musk, if they even saw a difference or recognized it.

The game will remain the game. I just don't see this as a big deal to worry about, especially since it hasn't happened yet. But at least it gives people plenty to talk about!
If it happens--a big if, of course--I think it will become fairly well known. News will spread beyond forums like this and reddit to all throughout Xitter, since you know Musk's going to brag and apparently you can't block him). Plus, even if he kept 5e/5.24 as is, he'd almost certainly institute changes to the online sections, especially with fees, so even people who don't follow social media would realize something happened.

I have no idea if Musk really would demand the creation of an "anti-woke" edition, or if he would simply demand that "woke" stuff be left out of future publications, or if he simply wouldn't care either way once he bought it and let it lie as-is.

Since true leftists are against the very existence of billionaires, I can't say how many "progressives" simpped for him. Of course, him outing himself for the trash that he is makes it not weird at all.

Heh some here simp for WotC and Amazon as well.

If you're selective about what you care about.... Well results speak for themselves.

Things are a lot better Herr but we went A,B, C, D,E to get to H,I,J starting 19th century.

If you try to jump to HIJ from D without doing the middle bits even if you make it it's unstable.

I agree with you on that, but alot of self identifying progressives did big time back not that long ago.

Hmm, I wonder what changed? On one hand, we have the Musk of a few years ago who was only known for electric cars which are a necessary step forward to prevent destroying the environment.

Then, a few years pass and he became known as a hateful bigot who considers his own child dead, believes in the Great Replacement Theory (bogus), has ruined a major social media company, broken every tech promise he made, treats his workers like slaves and hates regulations and unions.

Hum, this is a real head-scratcher, what could have possibly changed over the last decade?
