Elves and Rings of Sustenance

Sixchan

First Post
According to the DMG (p.195), a character wearing a ring of sustenenance can sleep for 2 hours and gain the benefit of 8 hours sleep.

But what effect does this have on an elven trance? I'd be inclined to go for 1 hour of trance equalling 8 hours of sleep (since 4 hours normally equals 8), but I can't be sure.

Please Help.:)

Sorry, have to disagree.

PHB, Page 154
"If the character does not need to sleep for some reason, she still must have 8 hours of restful calm before preparing any spells. For example, elven wizards need 8 hours of rest to clear their minds even though they need only 4 hours of trance to refresh their bodies (so they could trance for 4 hours and rest for 4 hours and then prepare spells)."

Sounds clear that 2 hours of rest from the ring, plus another six hours of restful calm is necessary to recoup spells.

Please read the original post.

It stated nothing about being able to cast spells. I would like to think that everybody knows that no matter what you need 8 hours to recoup spells.

We were just wondering about the shortening of the length of the trance that the elves have to go into. That is all, I think?

How are you doing today?

I am doing fine.

I have poured myself a mug of ale, and am now typing really strange things on a contraption that just does not make any sense to me.

Why is that?

Sorry, sometimes you see the same questions so many times you speed read over the new ones. :)

I'd say that there's no interaction between the two. A Ring of Sustenance shortens sleep to two hours, not by a fraction. Also, trance isn't sleep.

I understand that.

But, some beings require sleep to continue on. The trance ability of the elves is thier form of sleep. So, why wouldn't it halve thier trance time as well?

"Elves do not sleep, as members of the other common races do. Instead, an elf meditates in a deep trance for 4 hours a day. An elf resting in this fashion gains the same benefit that a human does from 8 hours of sleep."

and...

"This ring continually provides its wearer with life-sustaining nourishment. The ring also refreshes the body and mind, so that its wearer needs only sleep 2 hours per day to gain the benefit of 8 hours of sleep. The ring must be worn for a full week before it begins to work. If it is removed, the owner must wear it for another week to reattune it to himself."

Elves gain the benefits of 8 hours of sleep with four hours of trance. They could, one presumes, gain the benefit of four hours of trance by wearing the ring. It doesn't stand to reason they'd gain the benefit of four hours of trance with one hour of sleep.
