Encountering anti-D&D sentiment

Thanks for that, grodog, but this isn't serious enough to warrant calling in the troops.

And as for Bloostone Press, here you go...

which is a good reason to say "I write role-playing games." That way you avoid evoking any anti-DnD sentiment.

Of course since to 99% of the population "Role Playing Games" = D&D you're not really doing yourself any favors.

Or perhaps you are just hoping that a long winded explanation about the finer points of the OGL will cause their eyes to glaze over thus giving you time to escape?

Thank goodness the gro is here to set things on the proper path to escalation. :p

Malic - Not to worry, friend. I think everyone here is simply enjoying an academic discussion of the semantics. More of an exercise in pedantry than anything else. No real fire under the coals (not from this quarter, anyway). Sometimes I think I, and maybe others, forget that the casual reader might not realize that a lot of us are posting with a tongue firmly in cheek, and smiling even as we hold something under the microscope that requires no magnification. Right, bret? :)

Heh,
Speaking of silly predjudice/narrow-minded bigotry, I'd have to say nobodies ever taken the micky outta my RPGing, even when walking round the workplace in a GenCon or TSR (yep - THAT old) T-shirt.

O' course that might be to do with my height and body mass.

regards to all.

Eh, I live in a small town (we're talking about 1,500 population) of mostly rednecks.

About four months ago, I was sitting in the tavern working over some material that a company had ordered, and I had my nice printout of the SRD sitting there, when one of the local rednecks I've had run-ins before with sits down and goes...

"Whatcha writin?"

"A contract order. Why?"

"Fur wat?"

"Something that requires a 4th grade education, Luther, you wouldn't understand."

"This looks like one of dem dere rowl plahyin' gaymes I hurd Reverend Pat Rawbinsun tawk about. Dey mayk people kill demselves, ya know dat?"

"And beer made you as stupid as you are, what's your point?"

But then, most of you probably couldn't get away with that, eh?

I tell them whatever I feel: I write D&D products, I'm writing material for 3rd party publishers of D&D material, I write fantasy role-playing game material, I write sci-fi game material, leave me alone before I knock your other two teeth out, or the ever popular: "Are you still here?".

But them I'm just basically a nice guy, polite, well mannered, and kind to everyone I meet.

But you all knew that, right right?

FWVLIW, I think "I write for D&D" is excellent use of shorthand and is in no way disingenuous, assuming the crowd isn't gamers.

Also, amen to everything Joshua said, except for the apology part. In my opinion a huge chunk of gamers are just as narrow-minded about things they're not into, be it football, NASCAR, LARPing, fundamental Christianity, or what have you, but that, like most groups, they think they're special, different, and in some way above the fray.

Rule #1: Don't tell people you write for dungeons and Dragons.

Why?

Because it's better to say "I write reference and inspiration books for collaborative fiction elaboration."

You betcha, mark. But I'm still right. ;)

We all know how some people react to D&D but I wonder what the FURRY community go through?

Did you know? The Sanskrit word for "war" means "desire for more cows."
