Endurance

Why, exactly, is Endurance a skill? It doesn't appear to cover anything that wouldn't work just fine as a Constitution check. The only game design reason I can think of to make it a skill is so that you can give dwarves bonuses to it.

Not that it really matters, since you're not spending skill points, but it seems like a needless addition.

So, what you're saying is that you can't gain more endurance without raising your Con? I don't like that at all.

Marathon runners are good examples of this. Most of them are built like rails (and probably break like glass after on solid punch), yet they can run and run and run and run. Looks like Skill Training (Endurance) and Skill Focus (Endurance) to me.

How is that any different from saying swimming should be a strength check, or knowing about computer games should be an int check? it's something you can train in and become better at, and apparently something that comes up enough to make it equal with other skills. Why would it not be a skill?

More like Skill Training (Athletics) and Skill Focus (Athletics).

Endurance (Con); Armor Check Penalty -- Use this skill to stave off ill effects and push beyond normal physical limits.

Yeah, you can justify it but it isn't doing much for a stand-alone skill compared to say Nature or Thievery. Shouldn't getting better at those things really increase your Con?

For that matter, a few of the social skills could have been combined in my opinion, as well, and insight could easily be rolled into perception, if we're streamlining.

Possibly to let things like running a race or performing an arduous task be modeled as a skill challenge? I can see it being used for abstract chase scenes.

Marathon running has allways been con based, and fits into the idea most people have about con. Unless we're using skills that can use multiple stats (which I don't have a problem with, but we're not), you need a skill for "physical fitness/skill based off this stat", thus you have fitness-Dex(acrobatics), fitness-Str(athletics), and fitness-Con(endurance).

No different than Athletics and str.

Uh, no? Perception and Social Perception(insight) are seperate skills because the types of characters who have those skills tend to be very, very different. Also, both are very powerful, and are worth getting by themself. The same with the social skills. (with the possible exception intimidate, which while it's quite different, isn't considered overly powerful).

'Cause there no such a thing as a Fort Save anymore, unless you want the environment, or alcohol, or what-have-you, to make +X attacks vs FORT?

No, marathons are definitely uses of the Endurance skill. Endurance races and the like require a very different body type than short sprints and jumps. Have you ever watched the Tour de France? The sprinters in the race are generally heavily built guys who use strength (Athletics) to go really fast in short bursts. On the other hand, the sprinters are annihilated
by tough mountain climbs, where endurance and stamina becomes more important.

I have no problem with the Endurance skill. It covers an equally valid chunk of physical activities as Athletics and Acrobatics.

Honestly, I assume Endurance also does something we don't know about...

Like allow saves and/or bonus to saves against poison and disease. Poof, it would be useful.
