England, circa 1895

Hiya!

I know I'm crazy, but summer is here and I'm thinking of starting an historical game set during the Victorian period. It'll take place mostly in England, though world travel is entirely possible to Cairo or New York City or Shanghai.

I would much like to keep it on a more "social" type of play than a "combat" type of play. At this moment I don't know what kind of actual rules I'd like to use for it.

In the back of my mind I had the ideas of Jane Austen meets Sherlock Holmes - mystery amist society. The Victorian period in England is fascinating for me as it is the influx of the Industrial age with its scientific exploration meeting the old medival customs still lingering on. And from there the birth of much of the modern western world's neuroses I think. ;)

Any thoughts/ideas from anyone on this?

Sounds interesting...

Not that I have any real suggestions as to system/rules, except to express a vauge preference for GURPS.

I am definatly interested though.

I've never played D20 modern nor GURPS, but as a Jane Austin and Sherlock Holmes fan, and a consumate history buff, this does sound interesting, especially since Cairo, New York, and London are three of my favorite cities. (never been to Shanghai).

You had me at Jane Austen . . .

I'd prefer d20 Modern rules, just because I've sold most of my gaming stuff recently, including my GURPS, but I'm keeping Modern.

it's a realy interesting time, do you want to make it historic or with some myth built into it?

The time setting is historic - and I will be including real historical events into it with a twist of course - my take on it that is. There will be some mythic proportions to it, but of what will remain to be seen. It is a world of magic and science, mystery and mayhem, and a place for all who are curious.

I'm thinking of using pre-generated characters much like how I did in my Resident Evil game. This would help diversify the group a bit and help anyone unfamiliar with the time. There will be very grey characters, very good characters, and perhaps I might include an evil one in the whole group. You'll never know as I won't be letting anyone know each other's private history. It'll be as much trying to find out who knows what as what the hell is going on.

The books I have are Star Wars (in case we want to do a Victorian-Science Fiction-hmmm), CthlulosD20, Vampire the Masquerade, D20Modern, D&D. Don't really have GURPS that I can see but I'm sure I can bum that off someone. However, never ran a GURPS game before.

I would be interested in playing, too. (Being as historian and all that.)

However, given the debacle I produced in the "In-character" thread, I understand if you'd rather have me abstain.

Re: England, circa 1895 & D20:Modern

This sounds like fun to me... I've been reading Jane Austen this spring & really enjoy the D20:Modern rules.
