You're joking, right? As a counter example, I hold up TOS: Let That Be Your Last BattleField. The whole half-white/half-black racism thing. Not clever at all. But it got the point across, and it did it's job. Star Trek is well known for using the moral sledgehammer .

Let That Be Your Last Battlefield had absolutely no subtlety whatsoever.

But then there's a span of 35 years between TOS and Enterprise. The issue episodes come off differently because contemporary society I think is far more in tune with the issues than society of the '60s was. I think people are more aware of the problems or less willing to simply ignore them without getting slapped in the face.
