Epic Feats

First Post
A small debate arose in our group the other day, and being the DM I attempted to settle it, however I cant for the life of me seem to find an answer in the ELH, its very likely the answer is there and I'm just not seeing it.

The question is, do you gain access to epic feats when your effective character level reaches 21+ or only when your actual character level reaches 21?

There has been a bit of debate on the boards as well.:)

If you are a 21st level fighter, you are epic.

If you are a 10th level fighter, 11th level wizard, you are epic. You do not gain the epic bonus feats from those two classes, as you are not epic level in each class, but you character feats would be eligable for epic feats.

If you are a 19th level fighter and a half dragon, you are epic. As above, you would only get epic feats for your character level, not your class level, as you are only 19th level.

This, at least, is my interpretation of the rules. Firmly taking cover, I THINK this was the general concensus of the boards.

The ELH states that you use effective level. If your race is ECL +4, you'll get access to epic feats when you have 17 total class levels.

High ECL creatures and Epic Feats

So, does that mean "low-level" giants or dragons with class levels can gain Epic feats that much sooner? I'm not sure what the current ECL on a frost or fire giant is, but that sounds like some really possible nastiness!

THis is all true. However, the ELH is all optional. You don'ty have to use it if you think you'll unbalance the game.

Actually, IIRC, the bonus feats you get from each class from that point on (fighter bonus feats or the wizard bonus feats every 5th level) can be Epic feats from the associated Epic feats bonus list for the class.
