Epic Handbook just a little bit unreasonable?

Exactly. I imagine many, if not most, 20th level fighters will have swords (or other weapons) whose total bonuses push the +10 limit. And that's in addition to their +5 armor and +5 shields. If they had anything less, they wouldn't have as much a chance to defeat the kind of threats they'd be facing at that level.

Doh! that explains why my "epic sidebar" character isn't as tough as he should be.

Note to self, force dm to part with +5 armor and Shield, then up sword from +6 equivalate to +10. :D

Since it can be hard to force a DM to do anything, I would just persuade a PC wizard to create such items, or enlist an NPC wizard to do the same.

I tried to study chook poo, but had to settle for tai chi instead.

Ah yes, who could forget Chook Poo, the seminal martial arts TV series, starring David Carradine as Dung Beetle, an exiled Shaolin monk wandering the earth.

Aren't we already there yet?

I have to admit that I'm somewhat confused when people complain about not being able to fully flesh out their characters in twenty levels. I do understand that there are aberrations of a class system where you can multiclass into four different divine-casting classes and end up with an assortment of first and second level spells instead of one list of higher level spells, for example.

But in terms of power level... I mean, a 17th level Cleric can cause four people to implode and then bring someone back to life even if their body is gone. And that's just his or her ninth level slots. In most systems, that's INSANELY powerful. Heal is what, fifth level? How much more can you heal someone than all the way? Especially since D&D power is so often reliant on how much loot you're carrying, and so you'll probably need to scale the gear, too, but that's another flamewar. ;)

What kind of world is it where people are tossing off Mordenkainen's Disjunction like it's a cantrip? Isn't this what the Primal Order (also by WoTC, right?) is for?

Err wait Tsyr... Are you trying to say that Tenchi doesn't have overpowered protagonists? :).

Also for one nice good example of the better protagonist, DBZ...

Nope. The abilities of 20th level D&D characters still pale before the epic deeds of mythical heroes.

Eh. Depending on how the DM sets up challenges, it can be quite possible for a 20th level character to perform deeds counting as "epic". Heck, it's possible for a 10th level character to do the same. If a dragon is basically a big reptile, then slaying a dragon would be quite within the realms of the latter. It would still count as dragonslaying, and be recounted by the bards as such.

Epic is a state of mind.

Doh! foiled again, still only have 600 gp after paying for the last powerful magic sword. I t wasn't cheap especially since one of the other players died getting one of the exotic componants needed.

Note to self: Explain to DM, my character should have more than 600 gp.

Tenchi is powerful, and no doubt about Ryoko, but look at the villians. Kagato, Dr. Clay, and ultimately, Lady Tokimi. Having a Goddess as an enemy means that no matter how powerful the protaganist, it doesn't matter.

Okay, I'll grant you that Kagato is fairly dangerous. But Dr. Clay is a yutz and Goddess Tokimi doesn't, technically speaking, do anything.

Also, the danger of having a Goddess as an enemy is somewhat mitigated by having a TWO Goddesses as a secondary supporting cast.

Plot wise, the OVA isn't that great anyway. I much prefer Universe.
