A minor quibble, though -- many of the reviewers are quite eager to assign political agendas to some rather generic-sounding lines of dialogue. :\

It is kind of funny, and and a little disturbing.

It used to be that I saw the Rebellion as akin to the American Revolution, and the Empire was corrupt old monarchical England/Europe. You know, 1976, bicentenial and all that.

Agreed.

And people will try to assign modern political meaning to just about anything. The fact that many of Star Wars' themes can apply to so many times just helps it to remain as timeless as Lord of the Rings. Its not locked in just one time period that you have to understand the political and social ideas of the time to understand the work.

To me, the rise of the Emire during the prequels has had extremely strong parallels to Nazi Germany. But the idea of Star Wars being topical in a political sense is kinda quixotic, I think. It's very clearly based on what Lucas feels are human condition universals, and he's said as much time and time again. Finding a more topical application of the dialogue (which, like I said, appears pretty generic anyway) seems to be reaching.

I noticed that too. On rottom tomatoes a guy from The Slant (Ed somebody) describes

the showdown between Yoda and Emperor Palapatine on the floor of the Senate as the equivliant to the Repbulicans and Democrats agrueing in the US Senate

a tenuous connection at best. He desricbes RotS as an anti-Bush diatribe

Right, and the idea that Hitler fabricated a threat to get the public behind him, got voted in as Chancellor, took emergency powers for himself, never relinquished them, etc.

I mean, the plot itself of Palpatine's rise to power almost reads like a Cliff's Notes version of The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. And then, like Eric Noah kinda alludes to, the Rebellion itself reads more like a Cliff's Notes version of some history of the American Revolution.
