can you elaborate on what brute force specifically refers to? is it murdering NPCs when they can't convince them to do what they want or something else?

Well, it might have worked out that way sometimes because the same GMs who didn't believe in letting their NPCs actually cooperate at least some of the time often didn't believe in them fleeing when they were losing, but it usually wasn't the primary intent. But it did usually involve violence, because, honestly, that describes human history: if you really want something done, and you can't convince them or bribe them, violence is the next step, whether officially sanctioned or not.

Maybe they're just angry that their PCs aren't inherently better than the NPCs anymore and use brute force on the DM?
