Escaping an explosion

Methos007

First Post
Just looking for some help/suggestions here. My character is in a situation where he will be facing an explosion of unknown size and magnitude He's level 6 mage and none of the spells he has will be of much use. He does, however, have an item that may be of help.

Current Spells and effects on him:
HP: 35
Fly
SR 17
Energy Reduction (alltypes) 6

The item in question will allow him to cast any ONE spell from the Wizard or Cleric spells lists, 1st-3rd level.

Im thinking the best route to salvation is to somehow escape the area of explosion or render it harmless to him. The explosion is expected to be of various energy types. Stupid magic...

Thanks for the help!

Protection From Energy might be useful, obviously, if you can pin down the most threatening energy type.

Perhaps "Shield Other" if you think you can survive half of the explosion.

"Augury" to get divine insight on whether a plan is a good idea or not.

"Meld Into Stone" could work.

"Water Breathing" if there's a pool to hide in under water.

"Summon Monster 3" can summon an elemental which could be of some use in quick construction; a Celestial Dire Badger could dig a substantial tunnel to safety for you, which you could then collapse behind you. Now you're stuck underground alone, but maybe with lots of rock between you and the explosion.

"Detect Secret Doors" might find a way out.

"Alter Self" to assume the form of a creature that can escape (fast movement speed, fly speed, swim speed, whatever)

"Blink" lets you take half damage if you can time it right.

"Gaseous Form" might let you escape.

"Meld into Stone"

Wow! What a great choice, if you can use it. Some minor risk:

"Meld into stone enables you to meld your body and possessions into a single block of stone. The stone must be large enough to accommodate your body in all three dimensions....

Minor physical damage to the stone does not harm you, but its partial destruction (to the extent that you no longer fit within it) expels you and deals you 5d6 points of damage. The stone’s complete destruction expels you and slays you instantly unless you make a DC 18 Fortitude save. "

I would presume the explosion would NOT destroy the stone - and probably not even significantly damage it.

If you did end up taking 5d6 damage, you can survive that and the explosion will not have harmed you - only the explusion from the stone.

All in all, a good option if a large enough stone (say, a stone wall) exists and survival is your only goal.

I think an explosion should be a burst, so all you really need is cover.
A tower shield or Tortoise Shell would work well, as would hiding behind something solid.

How about rope trick? Just climb inside and the explosion won't even touch you.

(As an aside, Tiny Hut is a weird spell, and disappointingly useless here. It claims that "you create an unmoving, opaque sphere of force of any color you desire around yourself." Yet anything and anyone can pass through the sphere... completely unlike any other force effect.)

It just protects from weather, but not extreme weather. It's like an anti-weather force field, or a non-secure shelter...a bio-dome.

First or second level spell, tops, IMHO. Like you said, disappointingly useless.
