Italy - W³ochy

I was puzzled by this when I glanced at a Polish atlas. Any idea where the Polish word for Italy comes from - it's so different from anyone else's?

Oh, and Edena didn't allow for the option which many British conservatives would like to take - I'm in Britain AND I'm not in Europe!

Limburg boven !!!

Speaking from the other side of the great divide (aka the Belgian/Dutch border), I'd like to clarify on the situation of Limburg some more. Limburg as a region, is 'occupied' for about half by the Netherlands, and half by Belgium. We have our own (unrecognised, unlike Fries) language, which is decendant from the 3rd branch of nederdietch, (the other 2 branches now known as Dutch and German). We're likely also the people in our respective countries with the highest identification with our respective provinces (known here as "het limburg-gevoel").

You Dutch people complain about being occasionally called Hollanders, being the name of 2 provinces on the other side of the country. Here, our official name is Flanders, which happens to be ... the name of 2 provinces on the other side of the country.

As a matter of fact, the situation here isn't very much different from that in the balkan. Fortunately, historically, the entire region was roman catholic, or else we'd have been in just as many wars as those people. Though, as European unification continues, and more and more emphasis is put on regions i.s.o. countries, some 'swapping' might become possible (hey, I can dream, can't I ??? :D )

All this is, of course, neither here nor there.

In Northern Europe, there's a root often used to refer to foreigners, particularly from Southern Europe (esp. Romance-speaking), occurring in German "Welsch," Wallachia/Vlach, Romany "Vlax," and probably in the English "Welsh." I would guess that Włochy is that thing again. The Polish usage here is presumably a Medieval borrowing from German.

In Poland, Italy is apparently Wales.

Ok.
Can anyone give me the names of the countries of Europe in Limburgen, then?

I appreciate that many people in the United Kingdom consider themselves to not be in Europe.
I meant no offense in including the United Kingdom in this poll. Had I left the United Kingdom out of the poll, I think it would have been very offensive to some people from the UK.
I am, by the way, quite surprised nobody from Wales has chimed in. Where are the Welsh?

I appreciate that Russia has many states, and in these are many ethnic groups aside from the ethnic Russians themselves.
No offense intended, when I simply put Russia down as an option.
I am not familiar with the Russian political map at all ... I cannot name any of the Russian states. My apologies on the matter.

The same, for all of the other countries of Europe. I simply do not know the name of your states/provinces/territories. And if I named them all, the poll would have had over a thousand possible answers ... I think the moderators would have taken a look at the 1,000+ options available, and not have been very happy at all.

I appreciate that some countries have areas that speak languages other than the main language of the country per se.
For example, Spain has those who speak Basque.
France has Normandy, and those who speak Normandian (is that right?)
Germany has several different variants of German spoken, from one part of the country to another.

I welcome any language and the names you supply.
Tell me what the names of countries are in all these languages.
I still hope someone can translate the Gaelic names.

Incidentally, what is the United States of America called, in all these languages?
What is the name of my country, on your atlases?

I wish to say that, I appreciate our American culture and I appreciate my native language of English.
I hope all of you in Europe and the British Isles, are proud of your cultures and languages.
Your cultures and languages are most certainly worth being proud of.

Anyone who tells you your language and/or culture is somehow inferior to theirs, is a bigot and an idiot.
That is my opinion.
The opinion of an American, for what it's worth.

I would say the exact same thing if this were Nutkinland, and I was posting in the Fighting Words Forum there (I do not post in Fighting Words in Nutkinland for the very good reason that that particular forum scares me quite badly.)

It would be fun to see a poll where the Americans here tell from what country their ancestors came from. Maybe one of you is my far off relative :D (My grandfather's father's cousin went to the US in late 19th century, and his son turned up as the boss of General Motors. Quite a big step for the son of a poor farmer ;) )

The name of The United States of America in Dutch is De Verenigde Staten van Amerika.
We also shorten it to Amerika, De Verenigde Staten and that even to De VS.

As for the names of the states themselves, IIRC in the Dutch language they are all spelled the same as in English, with one exception: California is Californië in Dutch.

A question to Americans and Canadians (and to Europeans who are interested)

To all Americans:

I need the nickname of your individual state for my next poll.
I do not know all the names.
I know Michigan is the Great Lake State. Florida is the Sunshine State. Ohio is the Buckeye State. Kentucky is the Bluegrass State. Texas is the Lone Star State (and sometimes, Texas considers itself to be a country, not a state.) New York State is the Empire State.
But what are all the other nicknames?

To all Canadians:

Do the provinces of Canada have nicknames? If so, what are these names?

- - -

To all Europeans and those in the British Isles:

What are the names of the states in your countries? Or provinces/territories as appropriate.
Do your states have nicknames, like those in America? If so, what are the nicknames?

Speak up over there!
You are proud of your states and your countries, right? I hope so!
