My apologies to the people of San Marino. (I named it San Marcos.)
Also, my apologies to the people of Luxembourg (I spelled it Luxumberg.)

- - -

I meant this as a European poll.
I intend to conduct a poll for the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Oceania, Asia, Africa, and Central and South America.
I just could not do it all in one poll (I would have had to have listed over 200 countries.)

To all those in Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Oceania, etc., I am not trying to exclude you.
Please feel free to post to this thread!

My thanks to Tonguez from Polynesia. Thanks for the names. :)

And thanks for the most recent list of names, from Hungary and Russia.
Can anyone give the names in Gaelic?

I have heard both spoken and sung German and French.
They are both beautiful languages.

(sings in German from Hansel und Gretel)

Abends will ich schlafen gehn
Vierzehn Angelein um mich stein
Zwei zu meinen Haupten
Zwei zu meinen Fussen
Zwei zu meiner Rechten
Zwei zu meiner Linken
Zweie die mich Decken
Zweie die mich Wessen
Zweie die mich Weissen
Zu Himmels Paradeisen

(sings in French from Les Contes d'Hoffmann)

Elle a fui, la tourterelle
Ah! souvenir trop doux
Image trop cruelle

There are three distinct languages that are sometimes called "Gaelic," Irish (on life support), Scottish Gaelic (practically dead), and Manx (dead).

England - Sasana (Ir.), Sasainn (Sc.) ("Saxony", not to be confused with Saxony in Germany)
Ireland - Éire (O. Ir./Ir.) or Éirinn (Sc.)
Scotland - Alba (Sc.) or Albain (Ir.)
Wales - An Bhreatain Bheag (Ir., lit. "the little Britain"/"Brittany", not to be confused with Brittany in France), or some variant of Cymru, the Welsh name.
Sweden - An tSualainn (Ir.)
Switzerland - An Elvéis (Ir., Helvetia)

The rest aren't particularly interesting, mostly adaptations of the English names, and can be looked up in any Gaelic dictionary like
http://www.crannog.ie/focloir.htm , Scottish Parliamentary Dictionary, or http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/town/avenue/pa44/faclair/dict.shtml.

And the finnish names:

Denmark (The Faeroe Islands) - Fär Saaret
Macedonia - Macedonia
Azerbaijian - Azerbaidjan

Have fun trying to pronounce those!

In the interests of our foreign friends who cannot understand Finnish typonese (or properly spelled Finnish, for that matter...), these are actually Färsaaret, Makedonia (Technically, there is no letter C in the Finnish language, and it is used in only a few instances, all of which are quite new loanwords. The only exception is Chile, because of the Ch, which is not found in Finnish.), and Azerbaidzan (There should be a squiggle like this ^, upside down over the Z, but I can't find a way to put one there.).

And why, I can pronounce the Finnish names perfectly... :D

The Dutch once again come a bit closer to the English, it seems to become a photo finish :D

Anyway, the Dutch "Nederland" would translate in "Low Country" so the French Pay Bas is not so bad. Now for all you people who call the Netherlands "Holland", you are being a bit old fashioned. The last time the Netherlands WAS Holland with some poor backcountry in the form of a few other provinces was somewhere in the 16th century ;) Most Dutch people though are pragmatic about it, it is those Friesians (another province in the Netherlands) and Limburgers who nag about it. [sarcastic]Like they really care about it ;) [/sarcastic]

It was quite funny to hear on the BBC a radio show about the Treaty of Maastricht telling that the Limburgers would prefer to leave the Netherlands. My family comes from Limburg and I know quite a few people from that area, but that was the first time I heard that :D
