I'll buy the first initial set of rules. D&D is the "big thing" in rpgs and even if I don't plan on playing it, it is wise to at least understand the rule set. That said, I tend to not run new editions of D&D until they have been out for about a year and the initial rush of supplemental books are out. At that point I decide if I want to invest in the system and run it.

As long as it's available as a PDF I'll buy a copy upon release. Even if I don't play it, I love looking at mechanics and I'm sure there's something I can use for an existing game.

I don't have a lot of money to spend on rpgs these days. 5e definitely isn't worth it for me. Given that I can use existing rules or write my own, rules which are unambiguously better for what I want, I'd rather spend my entertainment dollar buying (other) books and movies and music. As a bonus, those products enhance my game more than 5e would.

I'm hoping there will be a starter box that gives me enough simple gaming for pick up games with my son's friends. If there is, and it's cheap, I'll get it right away. If not, we'll have to see. My gaming budget these days is decimated, so it has to be something I get real value from.

PS

I'm spending a lot of money on RPG's these days AT LEAST $25 a month. Some months upwards $70 -100 (usually after GenCon). Unfortunately for WOTC that money is going to Paizo for my AP and RPG subscriptions and now maybe their module line as well as soon as they change the format.

Unless it's for something like Castle RAvenloft or ther reprint of the Dungeon Boardgame, I have no intention of purchasing anything from WOTC or playing 5th edition.

If I want to play an older versions of D&D I'll play that. If I want to play a fantasy RPG that ISNT D&D I'll play one of those other games. D&D is pretty much it's own genre so when you start changing the game to the point where it doenst even resemble what it was? why bother with that game?

I'm not saying that's what 5E is. I have no idea what 5E is as I havent even downloaded the playtest materials. But after taking the chance with 4E and purchasing the gift box in order to give the game a fair shot and then realizing that while it was a well put together and designed game it wasnt what I wanted from D&D? I've decided that it was time for me to get off of the WOTC / D&D train.

So no wont be buying any of the core rules.

I'll have to peruse the final product before I decide, and even then it might be year later, after I have a chance to see how much errata is released on the game.

Honestly, I've got all versions of D&D - except OD&D- and a dozen retro-clones. I'm not seeing 5E being likely to get my buck unless it somehow miraculously works with all prior versions of the game in a single campaign at the same time. Otherwise, I'm just better off pulling out my old stuff. I certainly don't need a new version of rules to learn.

I haven't been that interested in D&D Next, and right now I have no plans to buy it or really follow it. It's not relevant to my gaming. I don't need new mechanics, so I'm more interested in buying new story ideas, campaign settings, or gaming accessories than another rehash of rules.

If you own every other version of D&D and its retroclones... I don't know why you WOULDN'T be buying 5E as well. You obviously like Dungeons & Dragons in all its formats. Why this one is suddenly the dealbreaker seems to run counter to your purchasing habits in the past. :)
