Exotic WP: Wet Towel

Snoweel

First Post
Before we get into Monty Python quotes:

... did, to wit, assault the enemy position with a wet towel.

I wonder if anyone remembers/still owns the 1e Oriental Adventures book.

I'm sure there was a weapon proficiency in there for fighting with a piece of silk. I was only about 11 or 12 when I read it, but for years I wondered what it meant by causing wounds merely by keeping the silk in a constant state of motion.

Then I got a little brother. I started to think the old wet-towel-cutting-his-leg-open trick was what was referred to in OA, and I was a bit disappointed that there was nothing like it in OA 3e (though I absolutely LOVE OA 3e).

So, anyone know for sure what OA 1e was talking about?

There are spells called entangling scarf, iron scarf and decapitating scarf in OA, that work basically as their names would suggest.

It wasn't a weapon prof, actually. It was a martial arts style maneuver, called Iron Silk if I recall properly. It allowed you to use a 10ft by 10ft peice of cloth as a spear.

it was ..uh... zany.

Steel Cloth:
With this maneuver, the character need never be without a weapon. Taking a 6- to 10-foot piece of cloth, the character whirls and snaps it tight, keeping it in constant motion, giving it the rigidity of a spear. The cloth is treated as a spear, except that it cannot be thrown. This maneuver is automatic, no die roll is made for success.

doesn't sound that zany to me.....actually looks like a good mid level feat....now to just figure the prereq's. Dex 13+ and...???

I'm sure there are others, but in the first Drunken master movie Sam Seed uses a wet towel to womp on a bunch of uppity waiters. Ah, such great cheesy kung fu goodness.

Steel Cloth! That's it. I knew it was something like that. But yeah, having seen it in play.. trust me.. it was zany. The monk in question prefered using that maneuver to most others, actually. Instances in which the monk used steel cloth include:

table cloth to fend off assassins.

different table cloth to use in a bar brawl.

using his cloak to fight a gorgon (*this was particularly painful*).

towel to kill someone in a public baths.

robe used to stab thugs in an alley way.

long scarf used to impale an orc from horseback.

torn tapestry to foil assassination of prince in our care.

ball gown, taken off of a courtier in the middle of a ball to fight charmed guard.

pair of pants used to fight brigands on the road.

bed sheets to foil robbery in hostel room

bed roll used to fight off lizard men in swamp.

(later, that same adventure) lizard man's hammock used to kill previous owner.

And so on. Yes. It was zany.
