Exp. leaches?

I have a related question from the other angle. Would you give 1/2 the exp to the party if they are of a lower level then the people that they are travelling with? If say they were 3rd level and the druids were 18th, or maybe even 8th. Would you then give more exp to the druids and less to the party?

How do you think they would react to this?

I just figured it was a Planar Ally, since the Circle apparently did hold it back...

Is that so? I thought that if it was a Planar Ally it wouldn't be held back; only were it Summoned would it be hedged out.

(also in the example above it begs the question - could the challenge have been overcome just by walking past the dead end and not tackling the fire elemental? That would have been cheap xps :))

Cheers

Huh. It's changed in 3.5.

In 3E Protection from Evil prevented contact by "summoned or conjured creatures". In 3.5 it's "summoned creatures".

Well, my fire elemental example is different to the Magic Circle fire elemental example. If we hadn't gone down the dead end, there wouldn't have been a challenge in the first place, so no XP for overcoming it :)

In 3.5 you award XP based on the character's level, not the average level of the group. You use the group average level to match up to the EL of the encounters.

A party of four 18th level characters escorting a pair of 3rd level druids about has an effective party level of 13. They should, as a result, be getting significantly more experience from encounters than they would otherwise, even dividing up the experience on an equal basis with the druids. I'm not sure why the PCs would complain about this.

So you would charge the Fire Elemental for the xp, too? :D

Yes! My characters and my whole group tend to fight just for the sake of it; xp, completionism, proving personal prowess, etc .. the real reason doesn't matter, we just like to kill all enemies* needed or not :p
