Expeditious Retreat and Fly ...

Hmm,

I had read the exp. ret. spell, but obviously not careful enough.

I agree, it does sound to me (now) that it would improve a physical means of travel (running, swimming, flying with wings), but not magical travel.

"Hmm," Where I'm from that means "D'OH!" ;) :)

lol :D

Ah, Read & thinking you understand, BUT NO! then Re-reading & feeling the spark of true comprehension (and humility / embarrassment). It's happened to me more times then I'd care to count, but I love it! It's like DM crack! Yes this forum should be call something like "DM BOOT CAMP" or "You don't know your @$$ from a hole in the ground". ;) :D:D

Actually I have a gripe with this. . named bonuses generally don't stack. . but a Luck Bonus that gives you +6 to AC stacks with a Deflection Bonus that gives you +6 to AC and those are similar effects.

Which is why I said "generally" and not "always". ;) Incedentally, don't circumstance bonuses stack as well?

My concern is that if you have a Supernatural ability you can't use a similar ability.

But you can. They just don't stack, generally.

For Example: a Vampire Sorceror couldn't cast the spell Energy Drain since they get Energy Drain as a SU ability, or a Vampire couldn't cast Dominate Person since they get it as a SU ability. Obviously these are apples and oranges, but they are along the same lines.

Well, a Vampire Sorcer could indeed cast Dominate Person and use his SU ability Dominate Person on the same target. But the effects wouldn't stack. They would just overlap.

Also, the Vampire Sorcer could most certainly cast Energy Drain on a target and also use it's SU Energy Drain slam attack on a target, but there is a difference between the two. The spell doesn't give him any hit points. His SU attack does. Also, negative levels stack.

So, technically, they're not even apples and oranges, but more like beans and rice. ;)

The vampire gets stuff for draining levels?

Yup. Page 8, MM, right side, Energy Drain...

For each negative level inflicted on an opponent, the draining creature heals 5 points of damage. If the amount of healing is more than the damage the creature has suffered, it gains any excess as temporary hit points.

EDIT: I went ahead and just posted what's in the errata, but the healing 5 points of damage per level is in the DMG and MM as well.

Well, then if it's a natural mode of movement...

Alter self+Expeditious Retreat. :)

Hey! Magic-Rub-A-Dub-Dub. :D

Indeed you could Squishy. Indeed you could...

or Polymorph/self/other, A Druid's shape change, ect... ect... ect... Always have other options Squishy. :)

If I recall correctly from the polymorph eratta, the maximum flying speed you can gain from changing shape is 150. Anything more than that is automatically considered (Ex) or (Su).

So, if all you want is raw speed, cast your Expeditious Retreat and then Polymorph into a medium-sized silver dragon (or whatever color suits you). Now you have a 300 movement rate.
