'Experimental' campaigns - how many sessions, really?

I've had the same campaign running for the past 15 years. Yes, characters have lived and died and lived again, they've traveled from one campaign world to another, reality has been destroyed and rebuilt putting them back at first level, but the STORY continues, even though only a couple characters have been around for more than a few years.

As many sessions as are still fun.

I've seen as many "by the book" campaigns disintegrate as "experimental" one. But the game has to be the key; the experimentation is second to that. IMG, house rules are always subject to revocation if they detract from the game itself. An experimental idea may provide the inspiration for a campaign, but not the substance, so it's always expendable.
