On the topic of recommending authors rather than characters, I've listed some of my favourite authors and their works I've enjoyed:

Warren Ellis (Transmetropolitan, Planetary, Global Frequency)
J. Michael Straczynski (Supreme Power)
Alan Moore (From Hell)
Garth Ennis (Preacher)
Brian Michael Bendis (Ultimate Spider-Man)
Neil Gaiman (1602)

I've also heard good things about Peter David and Grant Morrison, but never read their material.
