Explain this insult to me (from Archie comics)

So the other day I'm flipping through one of my daughter's Archie comics, and there's a scene where Reggie says to Archie, "You're so ugly, the last time you stuck your head out of the basement door, they started a hockey game."

WTF????

Anyone ever heard this or anything like it?

That's how I take it as well. He is so ugly that he looks like he plays hockey without a helmet so they all want to play hockey when they see him.

This is the correct interpetation of the 'joke'. Don Rickles was notorious for calling people hockey pucks...as in they had a face like a hockey puck.
