As I understand it, salamanders, toads and frogs are like canaries in a coal mine with regards to environmental change because of their highly permeable skin. They'll feel changes before a lot of other organisms will. If something starts happening to the toads, then you know it's only a matter of time before it starts affecting other things as well.

The last I heard on that it was a combination of:

1) lots of press coverage when there had previously been none on the topic
2) the normal random assortment of strange mutants in the population
3) extra limbs or lack of limbs caused by a number of parasitic infections in the local amphibian population

I hadn't seen any evidence of either pollution causing it. However it's not something I follow really so other evidence may be out there that I'm just not aware of.
