Exploring the Hase-Suna Complex (Manzanita judging) [Concluded]

Grunting in agreement, she had to admit she was slightly annoyed with the wind blowing down upon them. Of course, being the trusting soul that she was Payne eyed the vent cautiously as she passed, trying her damned best not to move under them. What if they were there to issue out toxic vapors? Though slightly side tracked by the grates in the ceiling, Payne did her best to thoroughly search the room for anything of interest.

It is still quite windy, and while Kongu has managed to get a torch lit for now, it is not clear whether it will stay lit. Do you do anything to try to shield it from the wind (which might also make it less effective)?

Lokin tries to use his shield to block the wind from the torch, standing right by Kongu. It may prevent light from illuminating that direction, but he figures he'll be the first to suffer if something tries to make use of that shadow.

Lokin and Kongu follow Payne around the room as she meticulously searches. Kongu holds the torch and Lokin keeps the shield just behind, so as to give Payne illumination while shielding it from the wind as much as possible.

To the right, the room tapers to a dead end. At the end are two metal chests, about 4' long, 1' wide and 1' high. To the left, the room continues on a diagonal, about 70' long and 15' wide. There is a door at the end.

All along the walls are ledges, racks and pegs, most empty. Payne carefully looks for anything hidden behind any of them, but finds nothing. There are two suits of leather armour and one of studded leather, all old and with holes making them of little use (+1 AC less than new). There are several loose metal plates that may have once been part of a suit of mail but clearly no longer. A wooden spear with its head broken off (useless except as a pole), a battleaxe and a longspear both with warped handles (-2 to hit if you try to use them as a weapon, although the heads will do normal damage), two daggers and a short sword that, while old, may still be the only fully functional weapons on the racks. Also three arrow quivers (empty) and a broken heavy crossbow (the winch is missing, possibly repairable by a bowsmith).

Lokin holds his position, protecting the flickering flame as well as possible.

"Looks like the old armory, I suppose. Most of this stuff is junk, though. Probably ruined before even the orcs or lizardfolk came or they'd of used it."

Patting down the armor creates a small dust cloud to puff upwards, an a sneeze to be emitted by the thorough thief. ``Bah. I guess we get to see what's behind door number two then, huh? This compound is really beginning to seem like a waste of time. What's an adventure without any loot?`` Well, at least she was back to her old self. Kind of.

Lokin sees the chests that Kol pointed at.

"I didn't see those. Those have some promise, don't they? Payne, if you could apply your expertise on those chests, maybe we can make this trip worthwhile."

With Kongu and Lokin right behind her for illumination, Payne inspects the chests carefully. She reports that one of them is booby-trapped -- there's some chamber that will open if the lock is forced. She can try to disable it, at the risk of setting it off (whatever it is) if she isn't very careful. The other chest, to the best she can tell, is just locked with a simple, inocuous lock she could probably pick with a little effort.

What does she do? And where does everyone else position themselves?

Dur, the chests. Apparently someone needs to read a little slower. Not really waiting long for the group to move out of the way, figuring they shouldn't be hovered over her anyway.. Payne opts for the trapped chest first. At least this way, if she died in the opening of it.. the other's would still be able to open the other chest. Maybe. Her tongue worked ferociously against the roof of her mouth as she went to work, her breathing slowed .. as she knew the danger that laid within.
