Failed Tracking checks

What happens when you fail a Wilderness Lore check to track a foe? Does it become impossible to follow them from that point on, and you have to turn around and go home? Or do you get to retry and possibly continue tracking, though with a loss of time?

From the SRD:

"If the character fails a Wilderness Lore check, the character can retry after 1 hour (outdoors) or 10 minutes (indoors) of searching."
