Fair spell immunities for outsiders

So, which are yoiu more upset about: that Raise Dead won't work on you? Or that Slay Living does?

I forget... :D

How many DM's use save or die spells on their PCs? Do you really let the life of a PC hang in the balance on a single die roll?

You'd be surprised. My DM has been throwing Slay Living at me since 4th level. And just go to any story hour, they change characters every week... . But through all this, I have managed to stay alive, so far...

I don't read the story hours, I spend enough time responding to the message boards as it is. :D

I guess I've always seen it as the characters are the central point to the games we play. Changing characters every few weeks will destroy or at least weaken that. It seems that in those type of games the campaign itself is central.

The group I play in doesn't have character death unless the PC does something really stupid. Instead, we have character failure. There are consiquequences that characters have to live with. It helps with character growth and we all find it more enjoyible.

Same here. As if I'd kill off a PC for failing a save and lose a great deal of work (background, NPCs, story arcs) in my campaign, not to mention hurt the fun of the player.

If a character dies, use Ressurection. The loss of a level is often a punishment for stupidity (eg letting the evil high priest, with the hand covered by black haze, close to melee and touch you!). Although I think having a monk use Quivering Palm after sneaking up on a PC is just plain wrong.

BTW, you can't be Raised from a death effect (like Slay Living), you have to use Ressurection.

I'm not a fan of having death be gotten around so easy. I know I'm in the major minority in this. There are no resurection spells of any kinfd in my games. To have this happen requires greater Divine magic. I'm lucky that both myslef and the rest of the group all see eye to eye with this. :D

Agreed...Me and almost everyone I play with neither likes bringing back the dead or allows it in their campiagns, or at least in the form of just any old mid-high level spell.

IMC, a dead PC has only reutrned once, and it was an accidental result of time travel that was done for other reasons entirely.

I dont use instakill spells on my players, and they dont use em on monsters (Except disintegrate, for some reason, prolly b/c its not necromantic). This seems to be an unspoken rule, beecasue it has nver come up in discussion.

But without the threat of death, even instant death, I would not like a campaing as a player. By all means, I don't want everyone to throw a slay living my way, but I don't mind it. It helps build an epic atmosphere - provided that returning to life is not impossible.

What is bad is that one of my party members (as a player) got into a situation, where he died without a save or any other possibility of avoiding it. He (big barbarian) goes into the local tavern and orders a beer. He then feels stronger and more vital than ever. We go off into the dungeon and then the drug stops working and, after a few hours, he dies.

This happened in the Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil campaign by Monte Cook. If it had been my player, I would have been angry @ the DM !!! That's no good.
