Familiars... what would you want in a supplement about them?

I myself would love such a publication. I would also like to see some prestige classes. Maybe like a familair Master, who every odd levels get a new familair. Or perhaps a presitge class where the wizard can empower his familairs with his own HP or spells, etc.

Perhaps also familairs as different objects other than animals. Suppose I wanted a wizard who familair was acutally a spirit trapped in a book or a sword. Or perhaps a sorceror whose familair is actually a living tatoo on his arm or something.

If in the process of doing it you include any new feats, prestige classes, or class variants make sure to make a fair amount of them sorcerer tailored and not Wizard tailored.

The reason for which is that WotC left the Sorcerer kind of bland. It's a concept with potential and so far the only books to explore it have been Spells and Spellcraft (Sorcerer only feats) and the Kalamar Player's Guide (variant class: Spell Singer).

That's a message I'd like to send to anyone doing d20 stuff with the core magic rules. The sorcerer needs attention. It needs flavor. Not powering up (that'll just get vetoed by most DMs), but expanding and theming.

I could see a whole avenue of exploration along the theme of Sorcerer's who have intered into soul or blood pacts with their familiars in order to tap into magical powers themed to the animal. Especially with infernal or celestial familiars, but even with normal animal familiars.

Good to hear and good ideas for prestige classes... I'll see what I can do ;-)

Hmmm... again some good comments that deserve some attention. I especially like the inanimate object familiar idea...

I prefer trying to keep feats as broadly available as possible, but I might during the course of writting have a change of heart and write a couple "special" feats.

I agree with you here... and that's one of the things I hope to write on... but not in this book ;-)

Hmmm... now that I might consider, but than again I would probably end up doing something similar for wizards... ;-)

Arcady & Blacksad,

You both bring up some good points and I would like to say that the main reason why I am choosing such a narrow topic is b/c I feel quite comfortable that it will fit into my probably page allotment... That being said I do agree that due to its narrow focus this supplement will appeal to less people, but I pride myself on doing the best work I can and hopefully the work will be enough to make people purchase it (and keep me fed ;-)

As for opening up a rules thread... I'm weary of such an idea b/c I prefer to do as much work in a vaccuum as possible... I'm all for ideas, but when it comes to rules I like to be confident that I have not fliched anyone elses...

You might say, but you said you'd take a look at Spells and Spellcraft, etc... Yes I did, but that is because such is released under OGL and so if I do end up using it I need not do much more than contact the company (not technically required, but good to do), identify the source in my work, and in the section 15... rules found in the Rules forum however are not OGL and so less "safe" to use... one of the many reasons why I do not go to the Rules section anymore... ;-)

Hope this explains my position a little better.

One more thing to consider! Familiars for other classes.

I think either bards or Clerics with the Magic domain would be good candidates for familiars, perhaps at the cost of a feat (or some other price).

PS

a precision: the nemuranai rules are for object wich becomes magical through spirit (kami) (but like Urklore, I would like inanimate object as familiar).

and a question, if I e-mailed rules ideas directly to you would it be ok?

Now that's a tough question for me... I suppose a private message would be fine... best to not send any mechanics though... general ideas of rules would be okay however ;-)

That way I can say... hey thats a good idea and then come up with the mechanics on my own ;-)
