Fans of Nightwish - for the love of God, don´t miss this!

Just a general thanks for posting this thread!

I'm a music nut whose favorite style is hard rock, in almost all of its incarnations (but I listen to and collect just about every style there is). I've been somewhat dissapointed in the new rock bands of the past 5 years- too many are being fronted by guys who simply can't sing.

Children of Bodom, Lamb Of God, Early Man, In Flames, Shadows Fall, Bear vs Shark, Mastodon, etc.- I'm looking at you!

Don't get me wrong- I don't mind gutteral vox, but they belong in sludgy bands like Soulfly or Slayer, not in front of cascading arpeggios and 64th notes!

About the only bands I've found on my own in this category were Evanescence and Lacuna Coil. And since my buddies don't listen to the same variety of music, I usually have to find my own stuff.

I'll have to give some of these bands a listen!

Oh NO you didn't! :p

Seriously, Randy Blythe of LoG is an amazing vocalist (well, screamer ;)), and the band as a whole are just frickin' awesome. I got into them just after Ashes of the Wake (so just before they got big) and man, I've never looked back. Favourite band, by far. The way that they mesh their amazing instruments with Randy's growls is just awesome - empowering and yet pummeling all at the same time. I love it, man - just love it. I could go on, but I won't, in any case.

Mastondon, in any cash, are meh, IMO. Saw them in the Unholy Alliance tour and wasn't impressed.

cheers,

OH JESS I DEEED!

I like the guitar work, but the vox just leave me flat. Its a personal preference, but if I'm listening to true guitar virtuosity, I want the vocalist to be able to hit and hold a clean note.

I mean, Rob Halford could scream, but he also had (had? HAS!) amazing control...

Fair enough; to them their own. I like the brutalness of Randy's singing. I also happen to like very clean singers, too. But brutal is tasty. :D

That was my thought exactly when listening to LoG. When I couldn't understand a single word, however, not even the great guitar music could cause me to like the songs. Little toned down and it woulda been perfect for me, though I suppose then it might be ruined for others, so it's impossible to win for everyone.

This just made me remember that I hated LoG when I first heard them. I also couldn't understand a thing they were saying.

But, I kept them in mind, and when I came back to them, I found that I really liked them. I've been progressively getting heavier in my musical tastes, with Gorgoroth, Cephalic Carnage, Cradle of Filth, Nargaroth, Nile, The Crown, Strapping Young Lad and some others rounding out my heavy end.

Of course, I also like stuff like Coheed and Cambria, The Used, Linkin Park, Smile Empty Soul, 38th Parallel, Skillet and more, so I have a wide selection to choose from :)

Hey...I listen to Godflesh...and Andreas Wollenvieder, so I know from broad musical tastes.

Like I said, I don't mind gutteral or screaming vox, I just don't like it with hypertechnical guitar work. Its not about the heavy, its about the way they piece their puzzles together.
